Worcester, MA --- Chris Ciampa (Danvers, MA) tallied a pair of goals as the WPI men's soccer team remained undefeated with a 4-1 triumph of visiting Elms in a non-conference contest played on Thursday evening. WPI is now 3-0 on the season while Elms sees its record move to 1-1.
WPI jumped out to quick 2-0 lead with a pair of markers in the opening 2:07. Ciampa picked up a loose ball and blasted a shot from the top of the box into the top right corner just 36 seconds in. Just over a minute and a half later Jason Hopkins (Mendon, MA) headed home a cross by Stephen Partridge (Worcester, MA) from five yards out.
After the frantic start, both teams settled in as the game remained 2-0 until the 53rd minute when Kyle Powers (Hamilton, NJ) and Ciampa put back-to-back headers together resulting in Ciampa's second goal of the game for the Engineers and third of the season.
The Blazers spoiled the shutout and in the process became the first team in three games to score against WPI when Joseph Coleman (Easthampton, MA) drilled home a laser from just past the six yard box following a pass by Josh DiNoto (Branford, CT) with 4:46 left in the game. The Crimson and Gray answered right back 58 seconds later as Chris Savoia (Pembroke, MA) registered his second goal of the year on a Sam Russell (Glastonbury, MA) assist.
Goalkeepers Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) of WPI and Ryan Sullivan (Agawam, MA) of Elms both made five saves. The Engineers enjoyed a 17-8 edge in shots while Elms took three of the game's five corner kicks.
Both teams return to the field on Saturday. WPI hosts Framingham State at 11am while Elms ventures to Springfield for a noon match. The WPI contest is the opener of an tripleheader on Alumni Field with Field Hockey entertaining Union at 2pm and Women's Soccer hosting Fitchburg State at 4:30pm.
