Worcester, MA --- Kurt Naugler (Westford, MA) notched a goal and an assist as host WPI defeated Emerson 2-0 in a NEWMAC men's soccer contest played Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field.
WPI improves to 8-2-1 overall and is now 2-1 in league action while Emerson dips to 4-4 on the season and 0-3 in NEWMAC play.
The two teams looked to be headed towards a scoreless first half when Naugler received the ball at the top of box, took a touch to the left and placed it inside the left post at 40:41 for his second goal of the year and fourth of his career.
The opening 45 minutes was tightly contested with WPI owning a 5-4 advantage in shots.
The Engineers took control of the game after intermission and were rewarded with an insurance goal at 61:02 when Naugler fed Matt Farrell (Groveland, MA) who beat the last defender and tucked the ball past the goalie. It was the fourth goal of the season for the freshman, all coming on Saturdays.
WPI took 10 of the 12 shots after halftime and attempted all four of the second half corner kicks. Overall Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, CT) and Tynan MacLeod (Groton, MA) shared team-high honors with four shots apiece for the Engineers while Adam Halliday (Malvern, MA) and Evan Gooden (Amherst, MA) combined for five of Emerson's six shots.
Jeff Wong (Millington, NJ) totaled three stops while posting his fourth shutout of 2013 and 14th of his career. It was the senior's 26 career victory in between the pipes. Carter Bowers (Gorham, ME) was stellar in net for the Lions, making seven stops.
WPI embarks upon a three-game road trip beginning Wednesday with a 7pm matchup at Wentworth. Emerson is right back at it on Monday with a 7pm trip to Rivier.
