Lightweights Shine for Wrestling in Home-Opening Tri-Match

Worcester, MA --- Norwich heavyweights Anthony Joyce (Lincoln, NY) and Steven Maldanado (Nyack, NY) clinched a pair of dual matches for the Cadets with last bout victories Saturday at WPI.  Norwich defeated Southern Maine 30-21 in the opener before knocking off WPI in the middle match.  Southern Maine completed the day with a 25-19 triumph over WPI in the nightcap.

Norwich (3-0) led Southern Maine 24-21 entering the last match and secured the victory when Joyce delivered a first period pin against the third-ranked wrestler in New England.  The Cadets rallied from a 16-3 deficit versus the hosts and found themselves trailing just 19-16 when Maldanado tallied a 11-0 major decision to send Norwich home with the sweep.

Dave Pinto (Milford, MA) and William Burns (Mascoutah, IL) each notched a pair of victories at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, for the Cadets, who also received important wins from Alex Stewart (Ellicott City, MD), Robby Zkyo (Staten Island, NY) and Evan Poole (West Milford, NY) versus Southern Maine and AJ Bongiovanni (Hopatcong, NJ) and Nick Smith (Hanover, MA) against WPI.

Southern Maine (4-1) tallied pins in the final three bouts against WPI to turn a 19-7 deficit to a 25-19 victory.  Jonathan Deupree (Ozona, FL) got it started with a first period fall at 184, followed by a Sean Fagan (Arlington, MA) third period pin at 197.  Joshua Andrews (West Newfield, ME) capped the comeback with a second period pin at heavyweight.  Khali Newbill (Wilton, ME) at 125 pounds, Carl Luth (Milford, CT) at 149 and Deupree and Fagan were multiple winners for the Huskies.

WPI (0-2) had an outstanding day in the lightweights with Brian Jennings (Danbury, CT), Tyler Tilbe (Woodbury, CT) and Tanner Burke (Derry, NY) all winning twice.  Jennings posted a decision at 133 pounds, against Norwich and a major versus Southern Maine, while Tilbe registered a pin at 141 versus the Cadets and a major decision against the Huskies and Burke record a pair of wins by decision.  Other winners for the Engineers included John Rheaume (Salem, NH) with a pin in his debut bout at 125 and Alex Freilich (Worcester, MA) at 197 against Norwich and Justin Marsh (Upper Black Eddy, PA) at 165 and Joe Pizzuto (Liverpool, NY) at 174 versus Southern Maine.

All three squads are off until over a week after the Thanksgiving holiday.  WPI will participate in the RIT Invitational on Saturday, December 7th while Norwich hosts Roger Williams at 1pm the same day.  Southern Maine will entertain AIC and Sullivan CC on Friday, December 6th before hosting its annual the Ted Reese Invitational the following day.
