Wrestling Celebrates Senior Day with Dual Meet Finale with Springfield in Harrington Auditorium

WPI Wrestling Seniors
WORCESTER -- Springfield received victories from all seven of its Region 1 ranked wrestlers as the visiting Pride spoiled Senior Day for host WPI, capturing all 10 bouts under the spotlight inside Harrington Auditorium on Saturday afternoon.

With the result, Springfield improves to 14-1 overall, while the Engineers conclude the regular season at 8-9.

Prior to the match, WPI honored its four seniors: 125-pounder Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA), 165-pounder Ryan Addeche (Foxboro, MA), 174-pounder Theo Sawyers (Boston, MA), and heavyweight Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ).

Springfield opened the afternoon with an upset at 125 pounds, as Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, MA) used a third-period takedown to defeat Region 1 fifth-ranked Pavis.

The Pride then sent three consecutive regionally ranked wrestlers to the mat, and each emerged victorious. Sixth-ranked Esuar Ordonez (Putnam Valley, NY) ignited the surge with a late first-period pin at 133 pounds, securing the fall with 24 seconds remaining in the frame. No. 6 Isaac Quiles (East Hartford, CT) followed with an 18-3 technical fall at 141 pounds, stopping the bout at the 2:00 mark of the second period. Fifth-ranked Ty Stewart (Dracut, MA) extended Springfield's lead with a fall at 2:30 in the 149-pound match, giving the Pride a 23-0 advantage four bouts into the dual.

Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, NJ) extended Springfield's lead with a 9-4 decision at 157 pounds before the Pride sent four more regionally ranked wrestlers to the mat — the final three ranked first in Region 1 and nationally ranked. At 165 pounds, seventh-ranked Gabe Thomasson (Norton, MA) recorded a 19-3 technical fall at the end of the first period to secure another bonus-point victory for Springfield.

Jake Deguire (Schenectady, NY) began the stretch of top-ranked Region 1 and nationally ranked wrestlers at 174 pounds, as the No. 3 nationally ranked grappler capped a high-scoring first period with a fall at 2:58. The final two bouts featured regionally ranked Engineers squaring off against nationally ranked Pride opponents. Myles Leonard (Waldwick, NJ), ranked sixth nationally at 184 pounds, secured a pin just 31 seconds into the eighth bout of the afternoon. At 197, No. 6 Oliver Parker (Pawtucket, RI) earned a 6-1 decision.

Springfield heavyweight Benjamin Katz (Medford, NY) closed out the dual with a 10-1 major decision, sealing the 47-0 final team score.

Both squads face a quick turnaround, as they will send wrestlers to the NEWA Futures Tournament on Sunday, hosted by Coast Guard. Competition in New London, Connecticut, is scheduled to begin at 11am.
