Balanced Attack Helps Women's Soccer Provide Schafer First Career Win

Northfield, VT --- Eight different players notched goals as the WPI Women's Soccer team provided head coach Steph Schafer her first collegiate victory with 9-0 shutout of Johnson State on Saturday afternoon.  The Engineers are now 1-0 on the season and complete competition in the three-team tournament on Sunday at 1pm against host Norwich (0-1).

WPI wasted no time denting the scoring column when Megan Forti (Lynn, MA) tallied her 21st career marker just 30 seconds into the match.  Natalie McMillan (Acton, MA) added to the advantage 1:59 into the game when she buried a rebound following a corner.  Courtney Langley (Fairfield, ME) concluded the early scoring barrage early in the 11th minute when she knocked home a pass by Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, NC) to give the Crimson and Gray a 3-0 advantage they would take into the locker room at intermission.

The Engineers posted another scoring spurt in the opening minutes of the second half, registering four goals in a 4:08 span.  Freshman Lindsay Schneider (East Lyme, CT) got it started when she planted a feed from Abbie McIninch (New Kent, VA) at 51:53.  Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) connected on a goal from just outside the 18 following a Emma Turton (Poland, ME) pass at 53:40 and then just 25 seconds later Julia Macleod (Medway, MA) netted a goal off a helper by Espinola.  McIninch concluded the run of goals at 56:01 when she deposited a rebound into the back of the net.

WPI added a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes with Turton heading home a goal at 75:27 and Macleod collecting her second of the day after a nifty cross by Turton at 86:06.

Goalkeepers Maddie Willer (Penfield, NY) and Sarah Monteith (Charlotte, VT) shared a clean sheet.  Neither was called on to record a save while Willer, who worked the opening 56:06, was credited with her 18th career victory.

Amber McCullock (Morrisville, VT) totaled 12 saves in net for the Hornets (1-1) while Briana Stadler (Cornwall, NY) was credited with a shot.

WPI enjoyed a 31-1 bulge in shots and attempted nine of the game's 10 corner kicks.
