Bracken's Late Goal Keys Women's Soccer's 1-1 Draw With Smith

Box Score

Worcester, MA --- The WPI and Smith women's soccer teams played to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Tuesday night in a key NEWMAC matchup at Alumni Stadium.

With the result, WPI moves to 6-6-3 overall and 3-2-2 in NEWMAC play while the Pioneers are now 5-6-2 and 3-3-1. It was the seventh overtime game of the season for the Crimson and Gray and fifth that went into the second extra session, including three that went the full 110 minutes.

Jackie Foody (Weston, MA) gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when she deposited a cross from Innis Hitt (Arlington, VA). In the 33rd minute, WPI's Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzea, NH) took aim just inside the left post where Smith backstop Shelby Hall (West Springfield, MA) was waiting. Nine minutes later Gomarlo looked to even the match once again; however, her one-on-one chance was halted by Hall. WPI also had a trio of quality chances in the opening half that went wide, including a laser from the right side of the box by Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) in the 24th minute.

Hitt's bid from the top of the box in the 51st minute was thwarted by the crossbar. Minutes later, WPI netminder Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY), the reigning NEWMAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, smothered an attempt by Jordan Houston (Logan, UT). With 4:36 remaining, Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) slipped a pass from Abbie McIninch (New Kent, VA) under a diving Hall to even the game at 1-1.

Turton nearly ended the game in the waning moments of the first overtime but her shot from the right side was turned away by Hall. Hall, who finished with 11 saves, later made a pair of stops in the final 90 seconds to preserve the stalemate. Teliska stopped two shots for the Engineers who held a 21-10 bulge in shots and a 7-4 margin in corner kicks.

WPI begins its last regular season road trip on Saturday, heading to Springfield at 1pm.  Smith kicks off a two-game homestand at the same time against Wellesley.
