Women's Soccer Overcomes Mount Holyoke and Weather in Regular Season Finale

Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) buried a header off a long cross by Karina Larson (Storrs, CT) late in the first half to help WPI defeat visiting Mount Holyoke 1-0 in a NEWMAC women's soccer contest played Saturday afternoon at a rain-soaked Alumni Stadium.

With the result, WPI pushes its record unbeaten streak to five (3-0-2) and is now 8-6-4 overall and 5-2-3 in the NEWMAC.  The Engineers will be the fifth seed in next week's NEWMAC tournament and will travel to fourth-seeded Wheaton in a NEWMAC quarterfinal contest Tuesday beginning at 1:30pm.   Mount Holyoke sees it 2014 campaign end with a 6-12 mark and a 2-8 record in conference play.

The two teams battled through rainy, windy and cold conditions throughout the match.  WPI dented the scoring column when Larson played a long cross from the right side to the far post.  Turton slid through the defense and headed the ball into the back of the net for her seven goal of the season and ninth career marker at 37:52.

The Crimson and Gray had the best scoring chance of the second half by Megan Hanshaw (Simsbury, CT) hit the crossbar on a blast from outside the 18-yard line early in the 54th minute.

WPI ended with a 12-3 edge in shots and attempted all four of the game's corner kicks.  Turton led all with four shots while Abbie McIninch (New Kent, VA) and Emily Doherty (Shewsbury, MA) both ended with two. Cassisy Robinson (Lebanon, NH) paced the Mount Holyoke offense with a team-best two shots.

The game featured a total of four goalkeepers with sophomore Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY) and rookie Ally Day (West Gardiner, ME) sharing the clean sheet for WPI.   Each made a save in their half of action with Teliska being credited with the win after playing the opening stanza.  Mackenzie Randall (Harwinton, CT) tallied two saves in the opening 15:33 for the Lyons while Zoe Marshall (Mississauga, ONT) registered four stops the rest of the way.

Prior to the match, Lauren Frank (Somerset, MA), Jacqueline Lynch (Bridgewater, MA), and McIninch were recognized as part of "Senior Day."
