Bracken Beats Clock in Overtime as Women's Soccer Stuns Wheaton

Box Score

Worcester, MA --- Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) delivered a historic goal at 99:56 to propel WPI past regionally-ranked Wheaton, 2-1, in overtime on Saturday afternoon in a NEWMAC women's soccer matchup at Alumni Stadium.

The win is the Engineers (4-4-2, 1-0-1 NEWMAC) second in the series with the Lyons (5-4-1, 0-1 NEWMAC), who entered the game with a 24-1 advantage dating back to 1995. WPI's victory snapped Wheaton's 21-game streak that began after a Crimson and Gray 3-1 win on October 10, 1998 in Worcester.

After nearly ending the game with nine seconds left in the extra session when her laser caromed off the post, Bracken lofted her own rebound just out of the reach of the leaping keeper from the top of the box five seconds later.

Gabriella Verde (Miami, FL) looked to put the Lyons on the board in the seventh minute only to have her shot punched away by Engineer backstop Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY). With 1:12 left in the opening half, Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) finished off an Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) rebound to put the Engineers in front 1-0.

Wheaton opened the second half with a quick equalizer just 47 seconds after play resumed when Lauren Corigliano (Roselle Park, NJ) sent a pass to the right side of the box to Julia Cipriano (Middlebury, CT) who beat a defender before scoring her fifth goal of the season. The Lyons had a last second bid in regulation but the shot by Kaitlin Montoya (Placentia, CA) rolled just left of the post.

Teliska stopped seven shots while the duo of Lauren Thacker (Brunswick, ME) and Ali Hinton (Lafayette, CO) combined to halt eight Engineer attempts.

Wheaton held a 16-14 edge in shots and a 4-2 margin in corner kicks while WPI finished with a 10-8 advantage in shots-on-goal.

The Engineers venture to Babson for a 4pm NEWMAC tilt on Tuesday while the Lyons, who entered the week ninth in the NSCAA Division III New England regional poll, play host to Keene State on Wednesday at 4pm.
