Box Score WORCESTER -- WPI senior Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) and junior Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) each scored a pair of goals in a 5-0 shutout of Fitchburg State on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer match at Alumni Stadium,
The Engineers (5-0) have now outscored opponents 27-4 and are now three shy of tying last year's goal total for the season. The Falcons, meanwhile, slip to 2-1 on the young season.
Doherty's goals in the 8th and 68th minute sandwiched Turton's two markers at 49:06 and 56:12. Junior Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) made it a 5-0 Engineer advantage early in the 70th minute. Senior Julia Macleod (Medway, MA), Sophomore Susannah Gray (York, ME) and Senior Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, NC) all recorded assists for the Engineers.
Junior Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY) was called upon to make a stop in the second half before yielding to freshman Gabi Hoops (Stonington, CT) for the final 18:59. Falcon goalkeepers junior Morgan Steele (Somerset, MA) and freshman Shelby Gale (Rockport, MA) each tallied three saves on the day.
For the game, WPI took 19 of the 20 shots and was awarded all seven corner kicks. Junior Ali Sheehan (Southwick, MA) registered the only shot, which was on goal, for the guests.
The Engineers head to city-rival Worcester State on Tuesday for a 7pm contest while the Falcons host Emmanuel on Tuesday at 7pm.
