Box Score WORCESTER -- Senior Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) scored a pair of goals as WPI held off Wentworth Institute of Technology, 2-1, in a non-conference women's soccer game Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Engineers (6-2) snapped a two game skid while the Leopards, who were 1-1-1 in their last three, moved to 5-2-1 on the season.
Doherty, who recently passed Beth Gilbert for third place on the program's all-time goal scoring list, turned and lofted a pass, from classmate Julia Macleod (Medway, MA), above the keeper 20 minutes in. Later in the half, Wentworth junior Mary Annon (Concord, NH), the reigning CCC Offensive Player of the Week, had a good chance in the 40th minute with a chip shot from the top right of the box.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Doherty struck again when she made a nifty move around a defender and found the back of the net for her 12th of the season. It was also the team's 30th of the season which matches the 2014 squads total output.
Junior Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) had a pair of close range shots denied down the stretch, including one that caromed off Leopard freshman netminder Michaela Robinson's (Goshen, NY) right foot in the 56th minute.
With 8:56 displayed on the scoreboard sophomore Emily Richard (Freemont, NH) put the Leopards on the board with a spin move inside the box with help from Annan in the 82nd minute.
Junior Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY) stopped two shots on the night while Robinson finished with three.
The shots were in the Engineers favor (10-5) while the Leopards had the edge in corner kicks.
Both teams return to the pitch Saturday for noon conference matches as WPI tangles with nationally-ranked Wheaton on the road and Wentworth hosts CCC-foe Gordon.
