Box Score WORCESTER – WPI and Babson played to a 2-2 draw Tuesday night in a NEWMAC women's soccer matchup featuring a pair of regionally-lauded teams at Alumni Stadium.
Both teams entered the game ranked in the latest NSCAA NCAA Division III New England poll as Babson (6-2-3, 0-0-3 NEWMAC) was slotted eighth and the Engineers (7-2-1, 1-1-1 NEWMAC) jumped back in at No. 10.
It was Babson's third consecutive draw in as many conference games. The Beavers accomplished the feat for the first time since joining the conference in the NEW 6 era (1987).
With WPI ahead 2-0, Babson senior Meghan Tyson (Scarborough, ME) planted a free kick into the top left 90 at 64:32. Senior Rachel Siegel (Longmeadow, MA) later sent the ball to freshman Jessica Fernandes (Pawtucket, RI), who spun and scored just inside the near post with 11:57 remaining in regulation.
The senior duo of Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) and Julia Macleod (Medway, MA) collaborated to put the Engineers on the board in the 14th minute as Macleod sent a though ball into the box to setup Doherty's league-leading 13th goal of the year. Six minutes later, Fernandes had a good chance from the right side; however, the ball sailed into the wrong side of the net.
Doherty looked to deliver her ninth career multi-goal outing with a laser that was picked off by Babson rookie keeper Elizabeth Mycock (Wudham, ME) with less than 15 minutes to play before the break. WPI outshot the Beavers 10-2, including 4-0 on goal, and were awarded all three corner kicks in the frame.
The Engineers made it a 2-0 game when junior Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) knocked home a cross from classmate Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, MA) at 60:59.
In the first extra session, sophomore Karina Larson (Storrs, CT) cleared the ball off the line and sophomore Kara Martin (North Hampton, NH) followed up with another team save on the ensuing corner. WPI then had a chance on the counterattack, which was led by Turton with a pair of shots. Nearly three minutes into the final OT, Doherty's shot sailed over the bar from 25 yards out.
Junior Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY) made one stop in the complete-game effort while Mycock and freshman Maddison Gierschick (Hopkinton, MA) corralled three saves apiece.
The Engineers host Emerson Saturday at 1:30pm while the Beavers travel to Springfield for a 2:30pm start.
