Women's Soccer Scores Early and Often in Non-Conference Triumph Over Suffolk

Box Score

WORCESTER – Sophomore Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH) tallied two goals while classmate Mari Bailey (North Providence, RI) and freshman Hannah Modelski (Hollis, NH) each added another as all three scored their first collegiate markers in a 7-2 victory over visiting Suffolk on Thursday night at Alumni Stadium. The Engineers seven goals are the most since a 9-0 win against Johnson State at the Norwich Classic on August 31, 2013.

Senior Emily Doherty (Shrewsbury, MA) also notched two goals for the Engineers (2-0) as classmate Jaime Espinola (Greensboro, NC) pitched in with a first half tally. Junior Janine Fatal (Amesbury, MA) recorded a pair of helpers to go along with one each from fellow junior Emma Turton (Mechanic Falls, ME) and sophomore Kara Martin (North Hampton, NH). All three goalkeepers saw action with junior Abbey Teliska (LaGrangeville, NY) in net for the first 45 and freshman Gabi Hoops (Stonington, CT) and sophomore Ally Day (Gardiner, ME) sharing time in the second half. Sophomore Megan Hanshaw (Simsbury, CT) chipped in with a team save in the 37th minute.

Suffolk (0-1) received a first half goal from sophomore Alexandra Nagri (Salem, NH) as classmate Jessica Harmon (Huntington Beach, CA) scored early in the second half with help from fellow sophomore Jennifer Martin (Higganum, CT). Freshman Kirsten Weiker (Durham, NH) stopped six shots, including a one-handed deflection in the 65th minute, for the Rams before yielding to fellow rookie Marisabel Pricilla (Indonesia) with 17:36 to play.

Doherty scored both her tallies in the first nine minutes beginning with a goal 36 seconds into the contest. Espinola scored off her own rebound to give the Crimson and Gray the 3-0 lead in the 26th minute. Later in the frame Gomarlo found success at the 42 minute mark off a through ball up the middle only to have Nagri answer in the 43rd from the top right of the box.

Suffolk cut its deficit to a pair when Harmon deposited a cross in the 57th minute. Bailey answered for the hosts two minutes later to push the advantage back to three (5-2). Gormalo used her second goal to make it 6-2 at 73:15 before Modelski capped the scoring when she split the defenders in the 77th minute.

Both teams continue non-conference action on Saturday afternoon as the Engineers hit the road for a 1pm appointment at Salem State and Suffolk hosts William Paterson at 1:45pm.
