Five Alive! - Men's Soccer Claims Fifth Straight Worcester City Tournament Title

Box Score

WORCESTER – Kurt Naugler (Westford, MA) was named the 2015 Worcester City Men's Soccer Championship MVP as WPI claimed its fifth consecutive title on Sunday with a 4-1 win over Worcester State at Alumni Stadium.

The Engineers, who shared the 2013 title with Clark, have now won six plaques in the eight-year history of the resumption of the tournament. Naugler, who scored a pair of goals against Becker and added an assist versus Worcester State, became the seventh different WPI student-athlete in seven-straight years to take home MVP hardware.

WPI, who is riding a 13-0-1 record since its only City Tournament setback in 2008, improves 3-0 on the year while the Lancers move to 1-1-1 on the young season.

WPI 4, Worcester State 0

Naugler fed Matt Farrell (Groveland, MA) who scored from inside the box for the early lead at 10:25. Chris Murray (Canton, MA) netted his first of the year at 20:59 and scored his sixth career Worcester City Tournament goal with help from Anthony Vigliotta (Beverly, MA) at 51:15. Nate Peterson (Mashpee, MA) headed in a pass from Brien Hard (New Hartford, CT) for the 4-0 Engineer lead with 21:50 remaining.

Worcester State had a chance in the 56th and again in the 57th minute. Noah Phelps' (Attleboro, MA) free kick was swatted away by WPI goalkeeper Connor Hoeckele (Granby, CT) and Andre Ipojuca's (Saugus, MA) close range header was halted by the netminder.

The Lancers finally broke through in the 81st minute when Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, MA) swiped the ball and scored from inside the box to put the Lancers on the board.

Hoeckele (2-0) and WSU's Tim Schmidt (Southwick, MA) (1-1-1) each made three stops for their respective clubs.

The Engineers held a 16-7 advantage in shots and were awarded nine of the game's 10 corner kicks.

Clark 4, Becker 0

Zack Blais (Tiverton, RI) completed the weekend hat-trick with a pair of second half goals as Clark blanked Becker, 4-0, to open the second day of the Eighth Annual Worcester City Men's Soccer Tournament at WPI's Alumni Stadium. He scored a late marker to force a 1-1 draw with Worcester State on Friday.

The Cougars were ahead 2-0 when Blais finished off a close range opportunity setup by Ethan Ziemba (Glen Gardner, NJ) and Jack Stark (Abington, MA) in the 62nd minute. Six minutes later he converted a penalty kick for the 4-0 advantage.

Clark dented the scoreboard in the 10th minute when TJ Zirkman (Freehold, NJ) deposited a high shot in the back of the net. Later in the frame, Jackson Cohan-Smith (Portland, ME) received a pass from Tim Rovnak (Portland, ME) and sent it in from the top of the box at 46:23.

Becker's Benjamin Cadman (Harvard, MA) absorbed the setback despite 16 stops on 20 chances while William Tripp (Aberdeen, MD) registered the only Hawk shot in the contest.

Alistair Richardson (Tolland, CT) and Willie McDonald (Norwell, MA) split time between the pipes for Clark. As a team, the Cougars enjoyed a 39-1 margin in the shot column and were awarded all 12 corner kicks in the game.

WPI hosts Framingham State on Wednesday at 7pm and Worcester State entertains Trinity on Tuesday at 7pm. Clark (2-0-1) travels to Colby-Sawyer for a 6pm match and Becker (0-3) heads to Nichols for a 4pm start on Wednesday.
