WORCESTER – Seniors Mari Bailey (North Providence, RI) and Cierra Ford (Georgia, VT) each scored a goal as WPI defeated visiting Emerson 3-0 in a NEWMAC Women's Soccer contest Saturday afternoon in Alumni Stadium.

The Engineers pick up three valuable points and are now 8-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in NEWMAC matches. Emerson, who surrendered its first conference setback of the season, slips to 3-5-2 and 3-1-0.

Bailey was credited with the game-winner for her goal unassisted goal at 6:48. With minutes left in the game, Ford found an opening in the top left for her first of the year at 88:01. Four minutes earlier, freshman Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT) dribbled in a feed, from senior Sophie Gomarlo (Swanzey, NH), and shot it to the bottom right of the net for the 2-0 lead. Senior Karina Larson (Storrs, CT) was looking for her second of the week with a free kick but the ball was blocked by an Emerson back at 81:25.

Junior Jess Frost (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) had time to setup a pair of good opportunities in the second half but both went high. She was joined in the shots on-goal column by sophomore Veronica Alberts (Half Moon Bay, CA) and junior Kira Venturini (Wallingford, PA).

WPI junior goalkeeper Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) stopped all three shots as Emerson senior backstop Laura Gartelman (Hamburg, NY) halted four.

The Engineers took 15 of the 24 shots and 7-of-10 on-goal. The Lions, meanwhile, had a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half; however, the Crimson and Gray ended up with the 4-3 edge after 90.

Prior to the game, Bailey, Ford, Gomarlo and Larson, along with Megan Hanshaw (Simsbury, CT), Kara Martin (North Hampton, NH) and Lizzie Rooney (Harvard, MA) were honored for their contributions to the women's soccer program.

WPI, who heads into exam week, resumes action with a 2pm appointment on Saturday at Mount Holyoke. Emerson travels to Wheaton for a 6pm start on Tuesday.
