Beauton Completes Hat-Trick as Part of Women's Soccer's Frantic Finish at RWU

Box Score

Bristol, RI --- Sophomore Leah Beauton (Colchester, CT) registered a hat-trick, including the game-winning goal, as WPI used a late outburst to fly past Roger Williams, 6-3, Tuesday night in a women's soccer match at a windy and rainy Bayside Field.

The Engineers snap a four-game skid and improve to 6-4 on the year.

Beauton was joined in the goal column by freshman Ranya Basma (Shirley, MA), junior Becca Hapgood (Halifax, MA) and sophomore Sofia Orrico (Bethel, CT).

After the Hawks (2-7) claimed a 2-0 lead in the first 15 minutes off tallies from freshman Kelly Yadoff (Wyckoff, NJ) and Raleigh LeMiere-Barnes (Los Angeles, CA), Beauton netted her first of the night at 27:55. It remained 2-1 until the sophomore scored again 4:38 after the break. Yadoff put the hosts ahead once more at 70:01 only to see Basma even the game at 75:20. Junior Kirsten Southan (Owings, MD) was credited with the helper.

With just over 10 minutes to play, Beauton completed the hat-trick with help from Hapgood. Hapgood made it 5-3 with an assist from junior Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, MA) at 85:28 while classmate Mandy St. Germain (Worcester, MA) registered a rare goalkeeper assist on Orrico's insurance goal at 88:17.

St. Germain was not called upon to make a save in her 14:55 shift but was credited with the win in net in addition to her first career assist.  Starter Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, CT) stopped two shots in 75:05 of work. Freshman Morgan Strassburg (Longmeadow, MA) was credited with 12 saves in net for the hosts. Junior Kayla Larosa (Newington, CT), meanwhile, chipped in with two assists.

The Engineers, bolstered by a 19-4 advantage in the second half, had a 28-11 edge in shots while both teams were award two corner kicks.

WPI begins a stretch of eight straight NEWMAC games to close out the regular season with a 1pm home contest Saturday against Smith.  Roger Williams plays the middle match of three straight non-conference games Thursday when it hosts Framingham State at 7pm.
