Packard Produces Convincing Win as Women's Cross Country Regains City Title

Paxton, MA --- Junior Sydney Packard (Georgetown, MA) won the Worcester City Meet in convincing fashion as the WPI women's cross country program collected its record 12th title, including three of the last four, Saturday at Moore State Park. Two-time defending champion Mia Rogers (North Dighton, MA) from Worcester State took home the Brian Savilonis Award.

WPI, the 10th-ranked team in the region, amassed 25 points while the hosts were second with 39. Clark was third (79) and Simmons was fourth (91). Anna Maria was also represented.

Packard posted a time of 23:41, or 3:57 per kilometer, which was 1:07 ahead of Rogers who placed in the top two all four years. Graduate student Emily Newman (Easton, MA), the 2015 champion, took fourth (25:16) as sophomore Keely Nistler (Vadnais Heights, MN) was two seconds behind in fifth.

Freshman Ciara Young (Milton, MA) and senior Steffany Halfrey (Hubbardston, MA) were the next duo to cross the finish line, claiming seventh (25:37) and eighth (25:38) places, respectively. Senior Carly Neeld (Williston, VT) was 19th (27:07) and sophomore Amanda Lowther (Syracuse, NY) was 22nd (27:32).

In addition to the activity on the course, the WPI cross country and track & field teams began a two-week food drive to benefit Why Me/Sherry's House, which serves families who have a child battling cancer.

The Engineers head to UMass Dartmouth Saturday.
