Rickson Racks Em Up as Men's Soccer Upends Emerson 3-0, on Homecoming

Box Score

WORCESTER -- Ben Rickson (West Warren, MA) netted his first two goals of the season and Brandon Hima (Oakville, MA) chipped in with a goal and an assist as WPI men's soccer remained unbeaten in NEWMAC play with a 3-0 shutout of visiting Emerson on Saturday morning.

The win was the second straight for the Engineers, who move to 6-2-3 on the season and 1-0-2 in conference play.  Emerson is now 2-8-1 overall and 0-3 against NEWMAC opponents.

WPI dented the scoring column early.  After being awarded a free kick 20 yards away in the left corner, Hima's restart through the middle of the box was volleyed in by Rickson for the back's second career marker just 1:18 into the match.

Hima was on the receiving end of the second goal.  Luke Reiniger (Rowley, MA) dribbled down the right side and his blast on net was saved but the inviting rebound found Hima's foot at the middle of the six-yard line and buried home for the junior's first goal of the season at 25:50.

The hosts closed out the scoring in the final minute of the first halfFranco Bazzini's (San Juan, PR) corner kick went long and was volleyed back into the middle by Erik Herrera (San Diego, CA) and smashed into the net by Rickson with just 48 seconds to go before intermission.

Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) made his first collegiate start a memorable one, making two stop on his way to a clean sheet.   Jose Pablo Rios (Mexico City, Mexico) recorded six stops for the hosts.  Connor Dang (Newport Beach, CA) paced the Lions offensively with a pair of shots, including perhaps Emerson's best opportunity when he belted a free kick to the left side that was repelled by Hendrick.

On the day, the Crimson and Gray held a 19-8 edge in shots and a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.

After a week off for final exams, WPI is back in action next Saturday with a 2pm NEWMAC road match at Wheaton.  Emerson is also off until Saturday, October 12th when they begin a two-game home stand squaring off with Babson at 1pm.
