Women's Soccer Stunned by Late Goal by Clark

Box Score

WORCESTER -- It was a late goal by Clark that sealed the deal as the WPI women's soccer team fell to the Cougars 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.

The Engineers fall to 7-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference play while Clark improves to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC action picking up its first conference win of the year.

Clark's Imani Salazar (Brooklyn, NY) scored the deciding goal in the 79th minute of play, for her fourth of the season.

WPI completely dominated the first half taking 12 shots to Clark's 1. Three of those shots came on goal, though Clark goalkeeper Morgan Small (Quakertown, PA) stood tall to help keep the score knotted at 0 until the end of the the first half.

WPI's best shot came in the 36th minute when the Engineers fired back-to back shots on net. The first one from Ashleigh Matsis (Milford, NH) hit the crossbar, while Meredith Eddy (Newfields, NH) followed that up with a header that forced Small out of net to cut it off, keeping the game scoreless.

The second half didn't see many scoring chances for either team but Clark managed to take a 1-0 lead in the 79th minute of play when Salazar broke up a pass at midfield, tapped it over to Mia Advocate (Merrick, NY) who sent it back to Salazer. Salazar raced up the field and beat an advancing Lauren Paul (Schaghticoke, NY) to her left for the first score of the day.

Paul finished with three saves and the one goal allowed while Small saved all four shots she faced on the day.

Before the match, WPI honored its seniors including Paul, Ranya Basma (Shirley, MA), Meredith Eddy (Newfields, NH), Maddy Fredrick (Las Vegas, NV), Ellie Patten (Scarborough, ME), Elizabeth Rocco (Fresh Meadows, NY) and Ava Schlesinger (Niskayuna, NY).

Both teams are back in conference action on Wednesday. The Engineers will be on the road for a match with Wheaton at 3:30pm while Clark plays host to Wellesley at 7pm.
