Men's Soccer Settles for Double Overtime Tie at Clark

Box Score

WORCESTER -- Visiting WPI outshot Clark 27-8 in crosstown NEWMAC men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon, but the Engineers settled for a 1-1 double-overtime draw. WPI, ranked seventh in the latest regional poll, moves to 7-3-2 overall, 1-2-1 in conference play, while the Cougars go to 6-5-3, 0-1-3 in the NEWMAC.

WPI dominated the statistics, holding the 19-shot edge over Clark, while also holding a 7-3 advantage in corner attempts.

Clark struck first on a bang-bang play, as Brian Brennan (Stoneham, MA) found the back of the net off of passes from William Lopez (Brooklyn, NY) and Teddy Donahue (Georgetown, MA) after just 17 minutes of play.

WPI junior Franco Bazzini (San Juan, PR) was all over the box in the first half, firing three shots, including one that was saved by Clark's Melvin Vincent (Rochester, MA), but the Engineers couldn't capitalize.

WPI finally broke through in the 60th minute, as freshman Ryan Dalton (Freehold, NJ) corralled a pass from Bazzini and sent it past Vincent to tie the game at 1-1. The goal was the first career score for Dalton.

Both teams had offensive chances in the closing minutes of regulation, as WPI's Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA) fired a pair of shots wide, while Clark's Alex Maiorano (Shrewsbury, MA) had an attempt sail over the crossbar, as the game went into overtime.

WPI dominated the first overtime period, out-shooting Clark 3-0. Bazzini had an excellent opportunity for the golden goal on a free kick, but his shot was corralled by Vincent, keeping the game knotted at one.

In the second OT session, WPI held a 3-2 edge in shots, but couldn't find the game-winner. Bazzini nearly broke through in the waning seconds, but a defensive save from Javier Amezcua (New Rochelle, NY) followed by a stop from Vincent, thwarted both attempts from the junior midfielder.

Vincent finished with nine saves in goal for Clark, while WPI's Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) made two in 110 minutes of action.

Both teams continue NEWMAC play next Saturday. WPI hits the road to play at Babson at 2pm, while Clark hosts Emerson at 1pm.
