Women's Soccer Downs Vikings to Extend Series Win Streak to Six

Box Score

Salem, MA --- In their return to the field after nearly two years, the WPI women's soccer team scored a 9-0 victory over Salem State as the two sides opened their seasons Wednesday night at Alumni Field.

The win pushes WPI's winning streak against the Vikings to six straight years, while the offensive output for the Engineers matched the most goals in a game in over a decade. The win is also the first in the career of co-head coach Sue Silva, who made her debut on the WPI bench.

Sophomore Molly Vincent (Douglas, MA) had two goals and an assist, and freshman Olivia Toolin (Bedford, NH) scored her first two collegiate goals for WPI, who had a 34-2 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage on corner kick opportunities.

Junior Josie Kim (San Jose, CA) netted the eventual game-winner just eight minutes into the action on a pass from classmate Lilly Proulx (New Boston, NH). The Engineers doubled their advantage three minutes later on an unassisted tally by Grace Casey (Winchester, MA), and went into the break ahead 3-0 when Vincent set up Toolin on the verge of halftime for each player's first points of the year.

Proulx ended up with three assists in the win, setting up goals in the 47th minute by Ranya Basma (Shirley, MA) and the 59th minute by Elizabeth Rocco (Fresh Meadows, NY). Hannah Wolfgang (Holliston, MA) got in on the action by assisting on Vincent's first goal of the night and then scoring an unassisted tally of her own four minutes later.

Freshman Mia Gilmore (Canton, MA) got her first collegiate point in the 84th minute when she set up Vincent for her brace, an achievement Toolin collected two minutes later with an unassisted tally to cap the scoring.

Sophomore goalie Lili Hellerman (Ashland, MA) was forced to make just one save to earn the shutout, the first of her college career. Salem State's freshman Cheyenne Frazier (Norwell, MA) made 16 stops as the Engineers put 25 attempts on goal.

Micaela Peysere (Bridgewater, MA) and Brenna Paquette (Hudson, NH) had the two shots on goal for the Vikings, with one needing to be cleared off the line by the WPI defense.

WPI (1-0) plays their home opener this Saturday when they entertain Western Connecticut at 2pm.

Salem State (0-1) will remain at home to host UMass Dartmouth on Saturday at 1pm.
