Box Score WORCESTER -- The WPI men's soccer team faced No. 7 Middlebury for the second-ever meeting between the two programs, and for the second time the game ended in a scoreless draw totaling 200 minutes of goalless action between the two teams.
The two teams also met in 2019 and played to an identical 0-0 tie in mid-October in Vermont. Both teams went on to earn at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament and won first round games by identical 2-0 scores.
WPI (5-4-5) entered the game ranked sixth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Region II Rankings while Middlebury (9-1-3) ranks seventh in the country and in the top spot in the Region I rankings.
Middlebury had a couple good looks down the stretch, first when WPI netminder Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) tipped a long free kick up and over the crossbar. With 90 seconds remaining, Jordan Saint-Louis (Potomac, MD) tried to head the ball into the back of the net but Mike Biando (Atlanta, GA) earned the defensive save for the Engineers, saving the ballgame.
The Engineers had a chance with four minutes remaining as Filippo Marcantoni (Ponti sul Mincio, Italy) ripped a shot that was saved by Middlebury goalkeeper Ryan Grady (Deerfield, IL), who was also involved in the last meeting between the two teams. Grady now has 200 shutout minutes against the Engineers and four total saves, two apiece.
Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA) led the way with five shots on the day for the Engineers while Saint Louis attempted eight shots, five of which came on net for Middlebury. Hendrick stood tall all night making eight saves to pick up his fourth shutout of the season.
WPI is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 22 when they head to Emerson for a 1pm match with the Lions. Middlebury will also be back on the pitch on Saturday, but at 3pm at Tufts.
