McLellan and Dalton Collect First Goals of 2022 as Men's Soccer and UMB Play to 2-2 Draw

Box Score

WORCESTER -- For the third-straight season the WPI men's soccer team and UMass Boston ended the regulation in a draw as the two teams finished with a 2-2 tie on Tuesday night at H.Carr Field.

In 2019, the Engineers (6-4-6) came away victorious on a Mark Calnan (Winchester, MA) golden goal 93:16 into play for a 1-0 win. The 2021 match up extended into double overtime where Luke Reid (Kingston, MA) took a Mason Perham (Hampden, MA) throw-in and made it the game-winner at the 103:36 mark as WPI earned a 3-2 victory.

In 2022, after a pair of goals from both teams, the non-conference game was labeled a tie after the regulation period.

Matthew McLellan (Hopedale, MA) put WPI on top first in the 33rd minute of action with some assistance from Filippo Marcantoni (Ponti sul Mincio, Italy) to earn his first goal of the season. Marcantoni drew the defender away from McLellan, who scooped up the ball and ripped a clear shot in the goal for the opening score.

But with just 22 seconds remaining before the half, Ryan Lima (Lynn, MA) evened the score for UMass Boston (9-4-3) utilizing a late free kick to make it one-all at halftime.

WPI pulled ahead in the second half as Ryan Dalton (Staten Island, NY) netted his first goal of the year in the 53rd minute after he stole the ball from a defender and got past the Beacon keeper Qasim El-Ashkar (Salem, MA) for the 2-1 lead.

But again, just over 10 minutes later in the 64th minute of play, UMass Boston was able to even the score on a Josh DeAlmeida (Revere, MA) goal, his seventh of the season, to make it a 2-2 game where it would remain.

Both teams had a handful of chances down the stretch, including a header from Alejandro Clermont-Delgado (San Francisco, CA) that went wide with just 30 seconds remaining in the game.

El-Ashkar was tested all night as the Engineers once again netted double-digit shots on goal making El-Ashkar face 12 shots on the night as he made 10 saves. Ryan Martin (Douglas, MA) got the start in goal on the evening for the Engineers and he faced five shots, making three saves.

The Engineers will round out their regular season with an important contest with MIT on Saturday afternoon in a battle of the Engineers at H.Carr Field at 3:30pm. UMass Boston will close out its season against Castleton University on Saturday, Oct. 29 at home at 1pm.
