Minneapolis, MN --- The WPI frontcourt duo of John Adams (Douglas, MA) and John Lowther (Hingham, MA) have been selected to the D3hoops.com 2022-23 preseason men's basketball All-America team. Adams, a junior, was named to the second team, while Lowther, a senior was tabbed to the fourth team.
Adams was the D3hoops.com Rookie of the Year during his debut season in 2021-22. The local product averaged 13.3 points and 9.9 rebounds with 16 double-doubles in 30 games, placing 15th in all of Division III. He ranked second in the NEWMAC in all rebounding categories, third in blocks (29), and fourth in field goal percentage (53.3%). Adams was busy on the postseason awards circuit, earning first team All-NEWMAC honors along with being named first team all-region by D3hoops.com and second team all-region by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
Lowther also racked in the postseason awards during the 2021-22 campaign. The forward was also selected first team All-NEWMAC and made it a clean sweep of the first team all-region accolades, garnering the praise of both D3hoops.com and the NABC. Lowther played in 27 games for the 2021-22 NEWMAC champions as he led the team in scoring at 15.8 points-per-game while shooting at a 50.6%. The 2022 NEWMAC Men's Basketball Tournament Most Outstanding Player recorded a 23-point effort in the 70-54 NEWMAC title victory for WPI's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
D3hoops.com has been choosing preseason All-Americas since the 2010-11 season. Adams and Lowther join WPI Hall of Famer and former assistant coach Jeff Robinson (second team - 2010-11) and Hall of Fame electee Sam Longwell (fourth team - 2014-15). WPI and defending national champion Randolph-Macon, which defeated the Engineers last year in the national quarterfinals, are the only two schools to have multiple preseason All-Americas in 2022-23.
Individual honors from D3hoops.com was not the only recognition to come to WPI's way this preseason. The Crimson and Gray, who reached the NCAA Quarterfinals for just the second time in school history last season, are ranked eighth in the publication's preseason Top 25. It marks the best-ever preseason slot for the Engineers, surpassing the 2013-14 squad which was ranked ninth.
WPI opens the 2022-23 season with the first game in all of NCAA Division III, hosting city rival Worcester State at 12:01am on Tuesday, November 8th.
