Jersey City, NJ --- Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ), Antonios Sevastos (Mansfield, MA), Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT) and Lucas Wilson-Wuestefeld (Barrington, RI) all recorded pins as WPI wrestling split of a pair of dual matches Saturday at New Jersey City University. The Crimson and Gray defeated the host Gothic Knights 39-18 in the nightcap after falling to nationally-ranked NYU 38-12 in the opener.
The Engineers used a trio of six-point victories to jump out to an 18-0 lead over the hosts. 125-pounder Thatcher started the early spurt with a pin at 3:54 and Connor Doran (Gales Ferry, CT) followed with an injury default just 1:53 into his bout at 133. Antonios Sevastos (Mansfield, MA), the runner-up at last week's Ted Reese Invitational, notched a fall with just 11 seconds remaining in the first period.
After New Jersey City captured three straight bouts to rally back to cut the deficit to 18-12, WPI rattled off wins in the final four matches to earn the team victory.
Edmondson got the run going with a second period (4:02) pin at 174 pounds and then Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA) bumped up a weight class and picked up a forfeit at 184. Tyler Riggs (North Scituate, RI) shutout his opponent at 197 pounds and heavyweight Wilson-Wuestefeld wrapped things up with a fall at 1:29.
Earlier in the day against the No. 22 Violets, Riggs and Wilson-Wuestefeld saw their arms raised with six-point victories in the final two matches of the first contest.
WPI is off for B Term finals and the Christmas and New Year's holidays. The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, January 7th, venturing to Bridgewater State for a noon tri-match with Wesleyan and the hosting Bears.
