Softball Opens Home Slate with Doubleheader Sweep of Westfield State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WORCESTER -- The WPI softball team swept its first home action of the season, winning both games of a doubleheader over visiting Westfield State on Sunday at Rooftop Field. The Engineers took game one, 8-0, and won game two, 5-2, to even their season mark to 6-6. The Owls dip to 1-9 this season.

GAME ONE

Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) tossed a two-hit shutout, as the Engineers needed just five innings to dispatch Westfield State, 8-0 in the first game.

Scoreless until the third inning, WPI posted two in the frame to start its offense. Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) and Stephanie Bishop (Milford, NH) opened the inning with singles, before a walk to Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) loaded the bases. Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) launched a sac fly to send Sheehan home, before a Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) single scored Russell for the second of the inning.

Westfield State's Jordyn Lummus (Pittsfield, MA) led off the top of the fourth with an infield single, but WPI got a double play and Martin struck out the final batter to end the threat.

The Engineers tacked on another in the bottom of the fourth inning as Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH) singled and stole second. A single from Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA) then scored Salvalzo for a 3-0 WPI advantage.

Another baserunner for Westfield State was stranded in the top of the fifth, as a Sarah Bingham (Reno, NV) single was the only hit of the frame for the Owls.

In the WPI half of the inning, the Engineers put the game away with five runs on three hits, capitalizing on a pair of Westfield State errors to end it at 8-0. Ambrosino led off with a double and was sent home on a Pritchard single. Pritchard then scored on an error off the bat of Shaina Lazarus (Thousand Oaks, CA), who came around to score on a passed ball. With the bases loaded, the Engineers made it 7-0 on a walk issued to Bishop, while Russell reached on an error to add the final score WPI needed to get the mercy rule win.

Martin threw all five innings for WPI, allowing no runs and two hits, while striking out six. Brenna Welch (Halifax, MA) suffered the loss for Westfield State, tossing four innings, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts.

GAME TWO

The Engineers got a career-high nine strikeouts from Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) but needed a late rally to overtake Westfield State in game two and complete the sweep.

WPI started the scoring in game two in the bottom of the first inning. Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) led off the game with a triple, and after a pair of strikeouts, she scored on a passed ball to go up 1-0.

Westfield State countered in the top of the second with a pair of runs to go up, 2-1. Katherine Canty (Natick, MA) worked a walk to open the inning, before Skyler Dutra (Mashpee, MA) sacrificed her to second. A single from Lexus Mastromatteo (Worcester, MA) advanced Canty to third, where she was sent home on a fielder's choice from Victoria Quill (Raynham, MA). Mastromatteo scored on a sacrifice bunt from Lindsay Cordopatri (Walpole, MA), but a groundout ended the inning.

WPI knotted the game a 2-2 with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Lazarus and Salvalzo led off with singles before advancing to second and third after a wild pitch. Diaz then drove Lazarus home with a fly ball to center to tie the game.

The Engineers took a 5-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Ambrosino doubled to start the action while Pritchard doubled to score Ambrosino and went to third on a wild pitch. A sac fly from Lazarus then scored Pritchard to make it 4-2 WPI. Salvalzo followed with a single and a stolen base, scoring from second on a Diaz single up the middle that made it 5-2. Kallie Case (Arlington, VA) singled, but Westfield State forced a groundout and threw out an advancing runner at home to limit the damage.

In the top of the seventh, Dutra doubled to lead off the inning before a pair of strikeouts. An infield single from Cordopatri put runners on first and third with two outs, but WPI's Bishop threw out Cordopatri on a steal attempt to end the game.

WPI's Togneri earned the complete game win, throwing seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts. Canty took the loss for the Owls, throwing six innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.

Both teams are back in action on Tuesday with home doubleheaders. WPI will host Brandeis beginning at 3:30pm, while Westfield State hosts Bay Path starting at 3pm.
