Softball Runs Past Arcadia to Sweep Through Glenside Regional

Box Score

Glenside, PA --- The WPI softball team took home the 2022 NCAA Division III Glenside Regional title, topping Arcadia 6-2 on the road on Sunday afternoon. The Engineers capture the program's third regional championship and first since 2016 to move to 33-14 on the season.

WPI will now play Tufts, winners of the Medford Regional in the NCAA Super Regional. The time/location for the series is yet to be determined. Arcadia ends its historic 2022 campaign at 32-11.

Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) earned her third victory in as many games in the regional, going seven innings, allowing two runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts to move to 23-5. Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH) collected two hits with three RBI, while WPI was hot on the base paths, yet again, tying a season-high with seven stolen bases.

WPI dented the scoreboard in its first at-bat, as a lead-off single from Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) scored on a Salvalzo single to center. The Engineers loaded the bases with one out but Arcadia's Juliana Presto (Easton, PA) induced a pop out and got a strikeout to end the inning.

The Crimson & Gray pushed it to a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the second. Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) reached on a bunt single and was sacrificed to third base by Russell. An infield single from Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) then drove in the second run of the game for WPI.

A two-run fourth inning made it 4-0 Engineers. Walks to Ambrosino and Stephanie Bishop (Milford, NH) and a fielder's choice from Sheehan loaded the bases with two outs before a Salvalzo single drove in two runs. A pop-out ended the inning, but WPI held its largest lead of the regional.

Arcadia dented the scoreboard in the top of the fifth inning. Morgan Tripodi (West Deptford, NJ) led off with an infield single, and a hit batter put two on base with no outs. A sac bunt moved the runners, setting up Madi Costigan (Marriottsville, MD) who drove a ball deep enough to right field to score Tripodi. Martin limited the damage, striking out the final batter of the frame to strand a runner at third.

Already up 4-1, WPI tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to push the lead to 6-1. Ambrosino led off with a walk before back-to-back singles from Bishop and Russell scored Ambrosino. An RBI ground-out from Sheehan then pushed it to 6-1 before a pair of fly balls got Arcadia out of the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Arcadia loaded the bases with singles from Tripodi, Grace Caldwell (Langhorne, PA) and Costigan. With one out, an RBI ground-out from Nathalia Diianni (Livingston, NJ) plated Tripodi to make it 6-2, but Martin induced a pop-out snared by Pritchard to seal the victory.

Martin earned the regional's Most Outstanding Player award, her second MOP in as many weekends as she garnered the honor at last week's NEWMAC Tournament.  For the second tournament in a row, the graduate student logged every inning in the circle for the Engineers.  Salvalzo, Ambrosino and Russell all were named to the All-Regional team.

Presto suffered the loss, going six innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
