Softball Forces Game 3 in NCAA Super Regional with 5-1 Win Over Tufts

WORCESTER -- The WPI softball team got base hits from all nine players in their lineup and scored runs in five different innings on its way to a 5-1 victory over Tufts in the second game of an NCAA Super Regional on Saturday evening at Rooftop Field.

The Engineers (34-15) and Jumbos (36-11) will play a winner-take-all Game 3 this evening to determine who wins the Super Regional and advances to the Division III College World Series.  It marks the first time in program history the Crimson and Gray have won a Super Regional contest.

Graduate student Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) tossed a complete game and struck out seven batters without issuing a walk to earn the victory and improve to 24-6 on the season.

WPI sophomore center fielder Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) was 2-4 with three runs scored at the top of the lineup. She scored the first run of the game, crossing the plate on a single up the middle by Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA).

Russell scored to make it 2-0 in the top of the third, this time on a base hit by Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH). That was the first of four-straight innings in which the Engineers put up a run.

Right fielder Kallie Case (Phoenix, AZ) picked a great time for her second home run of the year, blasting a shot to left center in the fourth.

The Engineers took advantage of three Tufts errors, including one that led to an unearned run in the top of the fifth, when Russell scored for the third time.

WPI made it a 5-0 advantage with a single run in the sixth, when Stephanie Bishop (Milford, NH) drove home Shaine Lazarus (Thousand Oaks, CA).

The Jumbos got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, when they recorded three of their eight hits. Two of those were singles by Rachel Moore (Atkinson, NH), who scored their only run, and Emma Jacobson (Washington, DC), who knocked her in.

Sky Johnson (Pismo Beach, CA) falls to 16-5 in the circle for Tufts. Johnson went the full seven innings, giving up three earned runs on ten hits while striking out two.
