#3 MIT Forces Sunday Title Game with Win Over #2 Softball in NEWMAC Tourney

Box Score

Babson Park, MA --- #3 MIT forced a winner-take-all championship game tomorrow, as the Engineers topped #2 WPI, 3-2 on Saturday at Babson in the NEWMAC Softball Tournament.

MIT (30-15) and WPI (29-14) will meet tomorrow at 1pm in a winner-take-all game for the NEWMAC title.

MIT's Becca O'Connor (San Antonio, TX) pitched a gem, going all seven innings, allowing just four hits and no earned runs. She struck out six and walked a pair in the victory.

A three-run third inning put MIT on the board. The first two batters of the frame reached on errors before Anya Chase (Wells, ME) laid down a bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Mackenzie Bivin (San Diego, CA) then reached on a fielder's choice to score the first run of the game, while Mikayla Cable (Valrico, FL) followed with a single to center to plate two for a 3-0 advantage. Martin got the next batter to fly out before Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) threw out a runner at home to end the inning.

WPI finally got its offense going in the bottom of the fifth, collecting its first hits and runs of the game. Shaina Lazarus (Thousand Oaks, CA) reached on an error and was sent home on a Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) double to left-center. A Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA) walk and a Kallie Case (Arlington, VA) single then loaded the bases. Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) laid down a bunt, which scored pinch-runner Amelia Montgomery (Acushnet, MA) to make it 3-2. MIT's O'Connor then buckled down and got the final three outs needed, as WPI stranded three.

MIT also left the bases loaded, stringing together singles from Dana Bell (Bensalem, PA), Katia Pendowski (Elk Grove Village, IL), and Jordan Sell (Schwenksville, PA) in the top of the sixth. WPI ended the threat with a fielder's choice, a line-out, and a strikeout to keep it a 3-2 game.

In the bottom of the seventh, a one-out double from Stephanie Bishop (Milford, NH) was sent to third on a groundout, putting the tying run at third with two outs. However, Connor got the final batter of the game to strike out, giving MIT the 3-2 victory.

Katie Martin (Bedford, NH) took the loss for WPI, despite not giving up an earned run. She went seven innings, allowing 10 hits with one strikeout.
