Savoie Tallied Equalizer as Men's Soccer Rallies for 1-1 Draw Against Wheaton

Box Score

WORCESTER -- Wheaton's Ewan Noble (Newport, RI) and WPI's Luke Savoie (Mansfield, MA) each notched goals as visiting Wheaton and WPI played to a 1-1 draw in a NEWMAC men's soccer contest played on a sun-soaked Alumni Field on Saturday noon.

With the tie, the hosts are 3-1-4 overall and 0-0-2 in conference action while the Lions are now 4-3-2 on the season and 0-1-1 versus NEWMAC competition.

Wheaton carried much of the possession in the opening half but it was WPI with the best scoring chances in the opening 30 minutes.  Aaron Vaz (Medford, MA) had his bid in front snuffed by Lyon netminder Cam Millington (Fairfield, CT) midway through the first half and Francesco Valagussa (Arlington, MA) saw his boot repelled by the senior goalkeeper at 29:43. The guests dented the scoreboard about 10 minutes later when Mo Faye (Kaolack, Senegal) was taken down in the box and Ewan Noble (Newport, RI) stepped up and drilled the ensuing penalty kick into the bottom left of the goal with 5:36 to go before intermission.

The second half was wildly entertaining as the Engineers knotted the game in the 76th minute when Filippo Marcantoni (Ponti sul Mincio, Italy) headed a loose ball in the middle of the field to space on the left side where Savoie pounced on it drove toward goal and launched a shot into the low right corner for his second marker of the season at 75:17.

Both teams had chances to go ahead in the final 10 minutes but Wheaton's Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, NH) had a pair of shots stopped by Crimson and Gray goalkeeper Roe Hendrick (Nashua, NH) in the 85th minute and WPI's Matthew Biando (Duluth, GA) hit the crossbar 30 seconds later and Vaz's subsequent rebound sailed high.

Millington registered seven stops on the day while Hendrick turned away four shots for the hosts.  WPI held a 17-10 advantage in shots and both teams attempted four corner kicks.

Both teams turn their attention to non-conference contests on Tuesday.  WPI closes out a two-game homestand when entertaining Wentworth at 7pm while Wheaton ventures to Conn College to take on the defending national champions at 4pm.
