WORCESTER --
Christopher Smith (Northridge, MA) and
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) won individual events to help lead the WPI men's swimming and diving team to a second-place finish in the Worcester City Championships, hosted by the Engineers on Saturday.
Smith won the 100 Fly title for the second consecutive year at this meet, improving by a tenth of a second over last year's time with a 52.67 finish. Doubek took first in the 100 Free, touching the wall in a time of 48.38, just in front of teammate
Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA), as the Engineers placed four of the top five finishers in that event.
Overall, WPI collected 34 top-five finishes, including eight second-place showings and the two event wins. Four relay teams finished as runners-up, including the 200 yard Free relay team of Schlessman, Doubek,
Sean Tesoro (Reading MA) and
Jack Brazer (Bolton, MA).
Doubek, Schelssman, Smith and
Owen Krause (Potomac Falls, VA) took second in the 400 Yard Medley (3:38.03) and the 200 Yard Medley (1:37.8). Tesoro, Doubek, Schlessman and
Andrew Van De Water (Stratham, NH) were runners-up in the 400 Yard Free Relay, with a time of 3:12.71.
Krause was a second-place finisher in the 100 Yard Breaststroke (1:01.6) and was fourth in the 200 Breast (2:19.48). Doubek was also second in the 50 Free (21.87)
Duryea finished fifth in the 50 Free (22.56) and fourth in the 200 Free (1:52.45), while
Austin Aguirre (Santa Maria, CA) took home third place in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:16.99).
Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) took second place in the one-meter dive with a score of 198.20, while
Alex Masiero (Richmond, MA) placed fourth with a 188.05. Additionally, Masiero and Corrente finished in third and fourth place respectively in the three-meter dive with scores of 187.90 and 171.95, respectively.
WPI amassed 848 points across the 36 events. Holy Cross won the Paul Parenteau trophy as meet champions with 965 points. Parentau founded the swim team at Holy Cross in 1965 and has been a coach and mentor to thousands of swimmers in the Worcester area for over 40 years.
Charlie Nascimben (Needham, MA) of the Crusaders was awarded the Justin Ferris award as Male Swimmer of the Meet. His teammate
Luke Parada (Morrisville, PA) earned Diver of the Meet Honors, an award named after Whit Griffith, WPI Coach from 1982-2002).
Clark was third with 441, while Assumption (257 points) rounded out the four-team field.
The Engineers are next in the pool on Friday, November 3rd when they host Babson, Brandeis and Coast Guard for a meet beginning at 5:30pm.
