School Record for Kang as Women’s Swimming & Diving Places Fifth at NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- Sophomore Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA) earned All-NEWMAC honors and set a new program record to lead the WPI women's swimming and diving team on the final day of the 2026 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships at MIT's Zesiger Center Pool.
 
Kang tied for second place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.66, eclipsing the previous school record of 2:06.15 set by Leah Kolb in 2022. The runner-up finish secured All-NEWMAC recognition and highlighted a strong closing day for the Engineers.
 
On a strong final day, WPI moved up another spot to finish fifth overall with 515 total points. MIT captured the team title with 1632.50 points, followed by Coast Guard with 750 and Wellesley with 651.50. Babson placed fourth with 530, while WPI secured fifth ahead of Smith (492), Wheaton (480), Springfield (363), Clark (223), and Mount Holyoke (168).
 
In addition to Kang's record-setting swim, sophomore Maria Korneva (Boylston, MA) placed 14th in the 200 back in 2:13.80, while senior Rachel Tsang (Acton, MA) was 21st in 2:19.60. Freshman Julia Gathy (Waterford, CT) finished 25th (2:22.08), sophomore Kaelin Harren (Norton, MA) was 26th (2:27.83), freshman Aspenelle De Los Reyes (Gorham, ME) placed 27th (2:28.26), and sophomore Emmy Roberts (Monson, MA) took 30th (2:34.80).
 
The Engineers opened the morning session with a strong showing in the 1650-yard freestyle. Sophomore Allie Marvell (Nashua, NH) placed fifth in 17:58.56, while freshman Amber Jacobs (Cedar Falls, IA) followed in seventh at 18:31.71. Gathy added an 18th-place finish in 19:32.69, and Roberts was 26th in 20:36.15.
 
Freshman Mallory LaPointe (Saint Johns, FL) tied for 12th in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.21. Junior Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) took 20th in 55.02, freshman Madison Harris (Upper Marlboro, MD) was 25th in 55.77, sophomore Sophie Robinson (Westboro, MA) placed 27th in 56.03, and freshman Amelia Rabe (Lawrenceville, MA) finished 43rd in 1:02.28.
 
WPI had three top-15 finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke. Sophomore Milena Whitney (Bedford, NH) led the group with a ninth-place finish in 2:28.32, followed by freshman Jasmine Lam (Dracut, MA) in 11th at 2:28.79. Freshman Audrey Cook (Wakefield, MA) placed 15th in 2:33.56, sophomore Niamh O'Sullivan (Basking Ridge, NJ) was 23rd in 2:40.24, and senior Alessandra Giovenco (Alexandria, VA) finished 30th in 2:43.62.
 
In the 200-yard butterfly, Kang added a 10th-place finish in 2:07.93. Sophomore Kate Creusere (Las Cruces, NM) was 12th in 2:13.25, and sophomore Veronica Finucane-Tuccio (Excelsior, MN) placed 16th in 2:19.57.
 
The championship concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay. The 'A' team of Waite, LaPointe, Cook, and Kang placed seventh in 3:37.62, while the 'B' quartet of Harris, Robinson, Creusere, and Tsang finished 16th in 3:44.18.
