Women’s Swimming & Diving Moves Up to Sixth After Strong Day Three at NEWMAC Championships

Cambridge, MA --- The WPI women's swimming and diving team climbed to sixth place after a strong showing Saturday at the 2026 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships at MIT's Zesiger Center Pool.
 
WPI now has 341 total points, moving up one spot in the standings. MIT leads the championship with 1079 points, followed by Coast Guard with 528 and Wellesley with 464. Babson fifth with 353, and Wheaton sixth with 352. Smith (310), Springfield (222), Clark (141), and Mount Holyoke (130) round out the field.
 
The Engineers opened the evening with a pair of scoring swims in the 400-yard IM. Sophomore Allie Marvell (Nashua, NH) placed seventh overall in 4:42.15, dropping more than four seconds from her morning swim. Freshman Amber Jacobs (Cedar Falls, IA) added a 13th-place finish in 4:51.40, shaving more than six seconds off her prelim time.
 
In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Sarah Kang (Richmond, VA) led WPI with a 10th-place finish in 58.12. Senior Kaitlyn Grove (Cheshire, CT) followed in 15th at 1:00.51, while senior Rachel Tsang (Acton, MA) finished 17th in 1:01.10.
 
Freshman Mallory LaPointe (Saint Johns, FL) delivered one of the team's top performances in the 200-yard freestyle, placing sixth overall in 1:57.11. Sophomore Kate Creusere (Las Cruces, NM) finished 16th in 1:58.64, and junior Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) took 17th in 1:59.09.
 
WPI's depth showed in the 100-yard breaststroke, as four Engineers scored. Sophomore Milena Whitney (Bedford, NH) placed 10th in 1:09.07, freshman Jasmine Lam (Dracut, MA) was 13th in 1:09.16, freshman Audrey Cook (Wakefield, MA) finished 14th in 1:09.26, and sophomore Niamh O'Sullivan (Basking Ridge, NJ) added a 20th-place effort in 1:10.86.
 
In the 100-yard backstroke, sophomore Maria Korneva (Boylston, MA) finished 12th in 59.98, improving nearly a second from prelims. Tsang returned to the pool to take 17th in 1:01.26.
 
Competition concludes Sunday with the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, and 400 freestyle relay. Due to inclement weather, the schedule has been condensed with finals contested during the morning session.
