Charlie Pavis (Bethlehem, PA) advanced to the championship final and
Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, NJ) and
Nicolas LeSieur (Walnut Creek, CA) registered fifth place showings as the WPI wrestling program traveled to Ursinus on Saturday and participated in the Racich Rumble. As a team, the Crimson and Gray finished eighth in the 12-team field.
Pavis won his first four matches to reach the finals with all four victories recorded a different way. The 133-pounder began with a 7-6 decision before posting a 18-1 tech fall, an 11-3 decision in the quarterfinals and a second period fall in the semis. The sophomore fell to NYU's Jacob Venezia in the championship bout.
Thatcher tallied five wins at 125 pounds. The sixth-ranked NEWA grappler started his day with a first period pin and at 13-6 triumph. After a loss in the quarterfinals, Thatcher rebounded with three wins, including a pair of falls to place fifth. LeSieur took a different path back to the podium. After a bye and then a loss, the 197-pounder rattled five straight first period pins, all in under two minutes, including one in 17 seconds.
Three rookies notched their first collegiate wins at 141 pounds.
Jonah Weber (Avon, CT) amassed three triumphs, including a first period pin in the winners bracket and 8-3 victory and a 20-8 major decision in the wrestle backs.
Mason Basara (Bethlehem, PA) registered a pair of victories and
Mason Medina (Orlando, FL) won in dramatic fashion, posting a 11-8 win in SV.
Ethan Wilson (Braintree, MA),
Joey Baisley (Charlotte, NC) and
Lucas Marchese (Branchburg, NJ) all posted two victories each at 149 pounds. Wilson notched a pair ofpins, Baisley collected a pin and a 16-0 tech fall and Marchese recorded a first period pin and a 15-2 major decision.
Zachary Rioux (Nashua, NH) provided the Crimson and Gray with points with a 6-0 shutout and first period fall at 157.
174 pounds saw the quartet of
Ethan Edmondson (Milford, CT),
Ryan Hsu (Norwood, MA),
Ryan Addeche (Foxboro, MA) and
Joseph Tully (Carver, MA) nine wins. Edmondson led the way with four triumphs, including a tech fall and a pair of major decisions. Addeche and Tully each tallied a pair of victories and Hsu delivered a 8-2 decision.
Joe Bernard (Stratham, NH) made his college debut a successful one by grinding out a pair wins by decision in the winner's bracket at 197 and heavyweight
Trevor Bowen (Frenchtown, NJ) had his hand raised one in victory.
WPI turns its attention to home opener next Saturday. The Engineers tangle with Norwich commencing at noon in the Sports & Recreation Center.
