Men's Swimming and Diving vs. Southern Connecticut
WORCESTER -- The WPI men's swimming and diving teams upended Southern Connecticut State on Friday evening at the Sports and Recreation Center, 176-114 to come away with the dual meet victory.
The Engineers took down the 2023 NE10 Champions in astounding fashion, coming away with 15 first place finishes of the 16 events, finishing with numerous season best times in the dual.
The 400 Medley Relay team started the night off on the right foot when the foursome of
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA),
Owen Krause (Potomac Falls, VA),
Lucas Pralle (Wayland, MA) and
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) combined for a season best 3:29.73 finish.
Aidan Greenfield (Northport, NY) took home the 1000 Free victory with a 2023 team-best and personal best time of 10:04.98.
Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) followed that win up by touching the wall first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:45.77, a career best for the freshman.
Smith led the way for a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 Back as Smith touched first in 52.52, a career and season best, while Doubek took second in 53.95 and
Jacob Antonovich (Fairfax, VT) touched third in 55.73.
The 100 Breast saw four top-5 finishes for the Engineers with Krause touching first with a time of 59.50, followed by
Austin Aguirre (Santa Maria, CA) in second in 1:00.63,
Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) in fourth in 1:03.15 and
Ryan Ng (Hasbrouck Heights, NJ) in fifth in 1:04.42.
Doubek raced to a first place finish in the 50 Free finishing with a career best time of 21.52 while Schlessman touched second in 21.97, Tesoro finished fourth in 22.34 and McCullough took fifth in 22.95.
The diving duo of
Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) and
Alex Masiero (Richmond, MA) took 1-2 in both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter Dives. Corrente finished with the 1-Meter victory and a total score of 189.91 while Masiero netted a total of 184.34. In the 3-Meter, Masiero took the win with a total of 197.47 while Corrente took second with a 172.35 total.
Back in the pool,
Matt Crane (Groton, MA) continued the Engineer success pacing a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 Free as Crane finished with a season best time of 47.83 while Schlessman followed up with a 47.95 finish and Doubek clocked in at 48.22.
Smith took home the 200 Back victory with a time of 1:55.79, another season best, while Antonovich earned the runner up spot with a time of 2:03.09.
Aguirre helped the Engineers kickstart at 1-2-3-4-5 finish in the 200 Breast as he clocked in with a season best time of 2:13.44, followed by Krause in second in 2:16.05, Milligan in third in 2:17.59,
Matthew Segui (Stanton, CA) in fourth in 2:21.82 and
Brian Hall (Westford, MA) in fifth in 2:24.59.
Greenfield took home the 500 Free victory in a time of 4:56.20, another season best, while
Sam Witscher (Portland, OR) took second in 5:03.52 and
Daniel Cory (Reading, MA) finished fourth in 5:05.09.
Another 1-2-3-4 finish for the Engineers came in the 100 Fly with Smith setting the pace in a season best 52.09, followed by Pralle in 52.74, Crane in 54.03 and Zuev in 54.76. The 200 IM saw another 1-2-3-4 finish as Milligan took home this victory in 2:00.09 followed by Aguirre in 2:00.66, Hall in 2:03.48 and
Bora Hurst (Mukwonago, WI) in 2:05.24.
The night wrapped up with a 200 Free Relay victory as Greenfield, Crane, Tesoro and Schlessman finished in a season best 1:26.27 to wrap up a successful night.
The Engineers are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 18 when they take on Bowdoin and MIT in a tri-meet beginning at 12pm at the Sports and Recreation Center.
