WORCESTER -- - In the first home meet of the season, the WPI women's swimming and diving squads came away with three victories in a five-way meet with Smith, Babson, Brandeis and Coast Guard on Friday evening.
The Engineers defeated Smith 188-109, Babson 163-124, Brandeis 168-119 and fell to Coast Guard 189-98. WPI left the meet with a pair of first place victories and 28 top-10 finishes.
Andrea Wu (Redmond, WA) starred for the Engineers in the event. The sophomore started the meet off with a second place finish in the 200 Free with a season best time of 2:01.57 and later added both of the team's first place finishes, first in the 50 Free with a season-best time of 25.14 and finally in the 100 Fly with a time of 59.56.
The diving duo of
Katrina Yurista (Laramie, WY) and
Samantha Scampoli (Needham, MA) finished 2-3 in both the 1 Meter and 3 Meter Dive during the meet. Yurista took home both of the second place performances finishing with a score of 207.60 in the 1 Meter and 211.65 in the 3 Meter Dive. Scampoli earned third place and 192.60 and 185.60 finishes of her own.
Wu was joined in the top-10 by
Kaitlyn Grove (Cheshire, CT) in the 200 Free as Grove came through with a sixth place, 2:07.98 finish, while
Leah Kolb (Canton, MI) and
Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) took home fourth (26.21) and sixth (26.47) alongside Wu's victory in the 50 Free and
Rachel Tsang (Acton, MA) netted a ninth place, 1:04.34 finish in the 100 Fly.
Morgan Foltz (North Easton, MA) started her meet off with a fourth place finish in the 200 Fly with a time of 2:24.90, later adding a runner-up finish in the 100 Free with a time of 55.94. Foltz finished the meet clocking in with a time of 2:16.09 for a third place finish in the 200 IM.
Foltz was joined by Waite in the top-10 of the 100 Free as Waite netted an eighth place, 57.60 performance and
Audrey Dino (St. Louis, MO) touched the wall in 10th place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:23.66.
Kolb added a third place finish to the list in the 100 Back with a time of 1:01.50 while Dino clocked in sixth (1:02.39) and Tsang finished seventh (1:02.42).
Adrianna Yuen (Grafton, MA) brought home a seventh place finish in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:16.28 and Dino finished with another podium performance with a third place, 2:16.29 victory in the 200 Back.
Kylie Herbstzuber (Medfield, MA) took the reins of the distance events on the day as the top WPI finisher in the 1000 Free with a fifth place, 11:22.83 finish while
Caitlyn Swartz (Pepperall, MA) earned an eighth place, 12:22.42 finish. Later Herbstzuber took home 10th in the 500 Free with a time of 5:42.95 while also netting a fifth place finish in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:42.17.
The relay teams came away with a second and fifth place performance on the night. The 400 Free Relay squad of Wu, Waite, Foltz and Grove closed out the meet with a second place, 3:46.62 finish while Dino, Herbstzuber, Tsang and Waite locked in a fifth place, 1:56.53 performance in the 200 Medley Relay to start the meet.
The Engineers are back in action on Friday, Nov. 17 when they take on Southern Connecticut State University in a dual meet at home at 6pm.
