WORCESTER -- Day two of the Gompei Invitational featured yet another first place finish as the WPI men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued to add to their total as they head into the final day of competition in second place.
Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD) raced away with the first place finish in the 50 Back with a time of 24.48, a career best and the fastest time of the season by an Engineer. Doubek touched the wall .79 seconds faster than his nearest competitor in the victory.
After two days of competition, the Engineers men's and women's squads to a combined second place finish with 3,747 total points. Bryant University stands in first place with 5,455.5 points while Bentley sits in third place with 2,475.5points. (Full standings below)
In the women's 50 Back,
Leah Kolb (Canton, MI) took home a sixth place finish to continue to add to the Engineer total, finishing in 27.96.
Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) had the next highest finish on the day for the Engineers, bringing home a second place, 200 Free finish with a time of 1:43.02, a career best for the rookie. On the women's side,
Morgan Foltz (North Easton, MA) finished in the top-10 with a 10th place, 1:58.75 performance.
Andrea Wu (Redmond, WA) earned another third place performance at the meet, this time in the 50 Fly with a time of 25.77, just .07 seconds off of their school record time set at last year's Gompei Invite. On the men's side,
Andrew Van De Water (Stratham, NH) took home a seventh place finish in the same race with a time of 23.72 while
Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA) took home 10th in 24.29.
After a busy first day at the Invite,
Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) finished in fourth place in the 100 Back to lead the Engineer pack in that event, finishing with a time of 52.55, while
Aaron Swann (Venice, FL) took 12th in 54.39,
Jacob Antonovich (Fairfax, VT) placed 16th in 56.06 and
Bora Hurst (Mukwonago, WI) finished 17th with a time of 56.61.
Owen Krause (Potomac Falls, VA) brought home a fifth place finish in the 100 Breast with a career best time of 57.43 while
Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) rounded out the individual swimming events with a sixth place finish in the 400 IM with a time of 4:20.01 while
Daniel Cory (Reading, MA) captured an eighth place finish in 4:23.13 and
Matthew Segui (Stanton, CA) came in ninth with a time of 4:25.03.
On the diving side of things, the Engineers got things going with third and fourth place finishes in the men's 3-Meter dive as
Alex Masiero (Richmond, MA) finished with a total of 364.15 and
Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) ended the day with a 343.50 point total, career bests for both.
On the women's side of things,
Katrina Yurista (Laramie, WY) and
Samantha Scampoli (Needham, MA) finished the 1-Meter Dive with eighth (353.70) and ninth (347.95) place finishes at the event.
On the relay side of things, the men's 200 Free Relay team of Doubek, Schlessman, Tesoro and
Matt Crane (Groton, MA) started the meet with a fourth place finish and a time of 1:25.47 while the women's relay team of
Kristina MacLeod (Jackson Hole, WY),
Elinor Ross (Brandon, VT), Wu and Foltz finished with a fifth place, 1:38.87 result.
The men's 400 Medley Relay team of Smith, Krause, Doubek and Schlessman combined to close the meet out with a fourth place, 3:29.42 finish while the women's relay squad of
Audrey Dino (St. Louis, MO), Ross, Wu and Foltz grabbed 10th place with a time of 4:05.54.
Prior to the evening session, WPI Hall of Famer
Joel Rousseau was recognized as the latest to be honored in the WPI Swimming and Diving Swimming and Diving Wall of Fame.
The Engineers, and the rest of their competition, will be back in action to close out the Gompei Invitational on Day Three on Sunday, December 9.
