Men’s 400 Free Relay Wins as Swimming and Diving Finishes Second in 10th Annual Gompei Invitational

2023 Men's 400 Yard Freestyle Relay
WORCESTER -- The WPI men's and women's swimming and diving teams rounded out the Gompei Invitational on Sunday taking home second place at the end of the three day competition thanks to numerous podium appearances throughout the weekend. 
 
Owen Krause (Potomac Falls, VA) earned a runner-up spot in the 50 Breast while Christopher Smith (Northbridge, MA) rounded out his time at the Invite with another podium appearance and third place finish in the 200 Back and the Men's 400 Free Relay team closed out the Invite with a first place relay finish to cap a successful weekend of swimming. 
 
At the conclusion of the weekend, the Engineers men's and women's squads combined for a second place finish with 5,551 total points. Bryant claimed first place with 8,051.5 points while Springfield leapfrogged Bentley on day three to finish the meet in third place with 3,611.5 points. (Full standings below) 
 
The relay team of Dean Doubek (Arnold, MD), Matt Crane (Groton, MA), Sean Tesoro (Reading, MA), and Nolan Schlessman (Sudbury, MA) came together to cap the meet on a high note with a 3:05.68 finish, shaving over seven seconds off of their entry time for the victory. 
 
Krause's second place performance came at the end of the day's individual competition as he wrapped up the meet with a 26.20 second, career best performance to cap his competition. On the women's side of things, Elinor Ross (Brandon, VT) took home a tie for sixth place in the 50 Breast with a time of 32.03. 
 
Smith's third place finish in the 200 Back came in a time of 1:54.96, his fastest of the season to capture the bronze medal. Jacob Antonovich (Fairfax, VT) took home a 10th place performance to add to the team total, finishing in a time of 2:02.33. On the women's side, Morgan Foltz (North Easton, MA) clocked in with a 19th place performance in 2:12.67. 
 
Doubek also brought home a fourth place finish in the 100 Free finishing with a career best time of 46.93 while Schlessman followed right behind him with a sixth place, 47.17 finish and Tesoro finished ninth with a time of 48.15. Andrea Wu (Redmond, WA) and Kristina MacLeod (Jackson Hole, WY) took 21st and 27th respectively in the women's competition with times of 53.32 and 55.44. Wu's ended with a first place finish in the C-Final. 
 
On the diving side of things, Alex Masiero (Richmond, MA) finished the 1-Meter Dive with a total of 359.50 for a fourth place finish while Val Corrente (East Setauket, NY) took fifth with a point total of 338.40. 
 
In the women's 3-Meter Dive, Katrina Yurista (Laramie, WY) finished the event in eighth place with a 369.40 point total while Samantha Scampoli (Needham, MA) earned ninth tallying 357.30 points. 
 
A slew of Engineers took part in the 100 IM as Schlessman netted a ninth place performance with a time of 53.89 while Fraser Milligan (Middlebury, VT) placed 12th in 55.77, Aidan Greenfield (Northport, NY) took 13th in 55.87 and Griffin Bowers (Ambler, PA) earned a 16th place finish in 57.26. On the women's side, Kaitlyn Grove (Cheshire, VT) earned a 12th place finish with a time of 1:04.73. 
 
Another gaggle of Engineers took part in the 200 Fly B Final as Nikita Zuev (Wallingford, CT) led the pack with a 12th place, 1:59.60 finish earning the runner-up spot of the B-Final race. Lucas Pralle (Wayland, MA) wrapped up his competition with a 14th place, 2:00.03 time while Bora Hurst (Mukwonago, WI) earned 18th place with a time of 2:02.23, Matthew Segui (Stanton, CA) finished 19th in 2:03.90 and Daniel Cory (Reading, MA) rounded out the pack with a 20th place, 2:07.01 finish. 
 
In the final competition of the weekend the WPI women's swimming squad finished fifth in the 400 Free Relay as Foltz, MacLeod, Katrina Waite (Falmouth, ME) and Wu combined for a fifth place, 3:35.83 finish, followed by the men's victory.
 
The Engineers return to action next Saturday, December 9 when they leave behind the Sports and Recreation Center for the pool at Wesleyan University beginning at 2 pm.
