Lum, Nagy and Ambrosino Dazzle as Softball Sweeps Lancers in Wednesday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WORCESTER -- A mid-week sweep of rival Worcester State highlighted the WPI softball team's Wednesday afternoon at Rooftop Field. The Engineers took game one by a 10-3 score and shutout the Lancers 8-0 in just six innings in game two.

Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) picked up the game one W for WPI (6-10), throwing five innings and allowing seven hits and just two earned runs while striking out three. Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) picked up her first save of the year with two shutout innings pitched and only one hit allowed. Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) went the distance for the Engineers in game two, pitching all six innings, allowing just three hits, no runs and striking out two.

Abigail Koziol (Lunenberg, MA) led Worcester State (10-8) with four hits on the day, two in both outings, while the Engineers were led by Destiny Lum (Kahaluʻu, HI) who was 6-for-8 on the day with four RBIs and three runs scored, including a perfect 4-for-4 outing in game one. Nagy was 2-for-3 in the first game of the day, with two RBIs and a run scored in addition to her heroics from the circle.

GAME ONE

WPI got the scoring going early putting three runs on the board in the first inning behind a double to left from Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH) to score Lum and Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA). Followed by a single to right by Nagy who drove home Salvalzo. The Engineers added another pair of runs in the second inning as Lum drove in her first run of the day on a double to right center, while Nagy drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 5-0 game.

The Lancers did all of their scoring in the fourth and fifth innings, before WPI picked back up in the sixth as Ambrosino drove in a pair after a bobble by the Worcester State right fielder. Lum followed that up with a single to left to drive in another, while Nagy followed suit and Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA) capped things off with a single to center to make it an 11-3 game and seal the victory.

GAME TWO

Once again, the scoring got going in the first as Lum continued to pile on the RBIs, reaching on a fielder's choice while Liz Jordan (Yardley, PA) scored what would ultimately be the game-winning run early on.

A five-run third inning sealed the win as Ambrosino started things off with a two-run homer, that once again brought home Jordan, followed by some small ball as Nagy and Pritchard got busy on the basepaths taking advantage of a wild pitch to make it a 4-0 game. Diaz doubled to center to bring home Nagy and then came around to score on a passed ball to make it a 6-0 game after three full innings.

In the fifth, Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) laid down a sacrifice bunt, which prompted an unforced error from the Worcester State third baseman that sent the ball flying into right field and allowed M Urakawa to scoot around all the way from second to build the lead to 7-0.

Lum capped off her performance by ending the day for the Engineers with a solo blast in the sixth that gave WPI a run-rule advantage and 8-0 win.
