Ambrosino Reaches 100, Togneri & Pritchard Earn Wins as Softball Takes Two on Opening Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Pasadena, CA --- Sixteen combined hits, one shut out and a pair of victories highlighted WPI softball's season opening doubleheader at Occidental on Sunday afternoon.

The Engineers (2-0) swept the Tigers (0-8) as Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) and Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) each picked up a win on the day from the circle as 10 different batters netted at least one hit on the day.

Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) hit the 100-career hit mark with a 3-for-6 outing, including a pair of runs scored while Liz Jordan (Yardley, PA) was 2-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and an RBI, and Destiny Lum (Kahaluʻu, HI) added a 2-for-4 game two effort with 2 RBIs. including the game winner in game two.

GAME ONE

The Engineers' first victory of the season was a shutout for starting pitcher Togneri who threw five innings of shutout ball before Pritchard came in to close things up with two scoreless innings of action. Togneri faced 19 batters on the day allowing just one hit while striking out six. Pritchard allowed a single hit as well and sat down one by way of the K.

Six different WPI batters netted a hit in the outing while Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH) drew three walks in the outing, scoring half of the Engineers' runs.

WPI got on the board first in the top of the third inning. After Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) reached first after a fielding error, she made the most of her opportunity stealing second. Salvalzo earned one of her walks to put runners on first and second with no outs. Occidental was able to get the next couple of batters to pop up in the infield, but a Pritchard double down the left field line drove home both Sheehan and Salvalzo for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Engineers bolstered their lead in the fifth inning. Salvalzo found herself on base once again via a walk and was doubled home a couple of batters later by Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA), who sent a shot to left center field to make it a 3-0 game.

Meghan Urakawa (Chandler, AZ) stepped in to pinch run for Diaz and a few batters later, a pinch-hitting Gabi Cerbo (Middletown, NJ) single to left brought her home to grow the Engineers' lead to four where it remained en route to the win.

GAME TWO

A Lum single to left field was the difference maker in the Engineers' sweep of Occidental College in game two. After the Engineers went ahead early in the game, Occidental evened the score in the bottom of the third at 2-all but Lum's fifth inning single put WPI on top, and for good.

Jordan started off the scoring with a double down the left field line to bring in Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA), who tripled to start things off, for the first run of the game. Pritchard later singled up the middle with two outs to drive Jordan home for the 2-0 lead.

Occidental evened the score in the third inning as a triple by Ellery Mitchell (Redwood City, CA) brought home Audrey Krishnadsan (Gig Harbor, WA) for Occidental's first run of the year. Sophia Siu (Castro Valley, CA) who stepped in to pinch hit, drove in Mitchell with a single to centerfield, and even the score at 2-all.

Lum answered in the top of the fifth as Russell, once again, crossed home plate which put WPI up 3-2. In the seventh inning, another Lum single resulted in another WPI run as she drove in Jordan for an insurance run as the Engineers came away with a 4-2 victory.

The Engineers return to action on Monday, March 6 with a doubleheader against Chapman  beginning at 5pm ET while Occidental looks to pick up its first win against Wittenberg on Wednesday, March 8 at 1pm.
