Nagy and Pritchard Homer, Lum Tallies Three Hits for No. 22 Softball in Twinbill at Chapman

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Orange, CA --- Day two of the season saw a pair of losses for the WPI softball team to Chapman on Monday afternoon. The Engineers fell 5-1 in game one and 8-4 in game two of the doubleheader.

WPI (2-2) recorded a pair of homers on the day, but it wasn't enough as Chapman (6-3) put together 13 hits on the day to earn the doubleheader sweep.

Rose Malen (San Rafael, CA) earned the game one victory for the Panthers while Simi Lauwers (Mountain View, CA) took the victory in game two and Jillian Kelly (Woodland Hills, CA) earned the save.

GAME ONE

Despite a 2-for-3 effort from Destiny Lum (Kahaluʻu, HI) at the plate, Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) picked up her first loss of the season, as the Engineers fell 5-1 to Chapman.

The Engineers got on the board first thanks to an RBI single to left center from Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) but Chapman responded in the bottom half of the frame with some small ball to take a 2-1 lead and the ultimate victory.

Chapman's first run of the game came via a sacrifice, bringing home Samantha Kennedy (Foster City, CA) who tripled to start off the inning. Later in the inning, a ground out to second base, brought home Ilianna Serna (Placentia, CA) with the eventual game-winning run.

Chapman added another trio of runs in the fifth inning to solidify the victory.

GAME TWO

WPI's bats started off strong in game two as the Engineers put up a three-spot in the top of the first inning. Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) started things off, beating out a single to the pitcher for the first hit of the game and later stole second. With two outs, Lum doubled to right centerfield bringing home Russell.  Lum crossed the plate one at bat later when Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) homered, the first of the season for the Engineers, to make it a 3-0 game.

Chapman would even the score in the bottom of the second inning, after a single to right field by Kennedy and an errant throw allowed two to cross the plate and make it a 2-2 game.

WPI put another run on the board in the top of the fourth after a Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) homerun to take the lead once again, but Chapman answered in the bottom half of the frame with a three-spot and another couple of runs in the bottom of the fifth solidified the victory for the Panthers.

The Engineers return to action on Wednesday, March 8 with a doubleheader against Pomona-Pitzer beginning at 4pm ET while Chapman returns to the diamond on Tuesday, March 7 against Alfred at 3pm.
