Say It Ain't So - Softball Swept by Sagehens

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Claremont, CA --- The WPI softball team's season opening road trip continued on Wednesday afternoon as the Engineers took on Pomona-Pitzer in another doubleheader.

The Sagehens (6-6) got the best of the Engineers (2-4) in both of the games taking game one 4-1 and game two, 5-0 shutout to earn the sweep.

Devin Waddell (Sherman Oaks, CA) went the distance for Pomona-Pitzer with a seven inning, three-hitter in game one, striking out six in the outing. Sophia Togneri (Husdon, MA) pitched 5.1 innings of action, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out three. Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) stepped in in relief, closing out the inning while striking out one in the loss. Erika Rivera (South El Monte, CA) picked up the game two win after five innings of scoreless pitching while Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) earned the loss for the Engineers.

WPI managed just three hits in the first game and five in the second as the Pomona-Pitzer pitching held WPI to just one run on the day.

Amanda Robman (San Ramon, CA) was 5-for-7 on the day with two runs scored for the Sagehens while Kylie Liu (Palo Alto, CA) was 2-for-3 in game one with two runs scored and an RBI and Waddell was 2-for-4 in game two with a homerun.

GAME ONE

WPI was held to just three hits in the outing, though one was a Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) single to center field which accounted for the Engineers' lone run of the game in the 4-1 loss.

Waddell helped her own cause when she got Pomona-Pitzer on the board in the first inning when she grounded out to second base which brought home Liu, who started things off with a double to centerfield to start the inning.

Liu added to the total, scoring her, and the team's, second run of the day with a solo shot in the fifth inning.

WPI got on the board in the top of the sixth inning as Meg Sherwood (Norfolk, MA) singled to right field to start the inning, moving over to second on a sac bunt from Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) and over to third on a ground out from Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH). She came home via the single to center from Ambrosino to make it a 2-1 game.

But the Sagehens put the game out of reach with a two-run bottom of the sixth to take home the win.

GAME TWO

Pomona-Pitzer got on the board first in the bottom of the third. On a Lauren Ziment (San Diego, CA) single to right field, Robman came around to score for the first run of the game, though Waddell was thrown out at the plate trying to go second to home by WPI right fielder Ava Laughlin (Chester Springs, PA) to stymie the offense.

The Sagehens added another in the fourth inning on a Bella Carreon (Foster City, CA) solo shot to left centerfield to lead off the frame, and added another pair of runs in the fifth inning. Emily Hurtado (Gardena, CA) started off the inning with a single to center which prompted a WPI pitching change, who quickly earned an out. But with bases loaded later in the inning, an Addie Wasikonis (State College, PA) single up the middle brought home a pair of runs for a 4-0 lead.

Waddell added a solo homer to right field in the sixth inning, and despite initially loading the bases on a pair of walks, a recently entered Togneri was able to settle down and sit the Sagehens down to end the inning with Pomona-Pitzer up 5-0.

In the top of the seventh, WPI was unable to get anything on the board as they fell 5-0.

The Engineers return to action on Thursday, March 9 with a doubleheader against La Verne beginning at 6pm ET. This game was previously scheduled for Friday but was moved up a day due to weather in the area. Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Friday, March 10 with a doubleheader against two different teams when they first take on Buena Vista at 1pm followed by a meeting with Manhattanville at 3pm.
