La Verne, CA --- The road warrior WPI softball team continued to add the games to its total playing its seventh and eighth games of a five day stretch over spring break with a doubleheader at the University of La Verne Thursday night.  

The Leopards (11-6) came away with a sweep of WPI on the evening taking game one 6-4 and coming away with a game two comeback victory, winning 9-5. 

Destiny Lum (Kahaluʻu, HI) finished the day 4-for-6 at the plate, scoring three runs and netting two RBIs. Lindsey Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) added a 3-for-7 outing with three total runs scored and four RBIs. 

Rachel Rubio (Long Beach, CA) picked up the game one win for La Verne, her fifth of the year, pitching all seven innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and striking out three. Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) and Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) split time on the mound for the Engineers, combining to allow 11 hits, and the six runs, striking out two. In game two, the WPI pitching trio found themselves on the mound with Togneri picking up the loss while Rubio earned her second win of the day in a relief effort, allowing no runs in 2.1 innings pitched while striking out five.  

GAME ONE 

The Leopards got the best of WPI in game one of the night utilizing a three run third inning to propel themselves to victory.  

WPI struck first in the first inning when Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) singled up the middle and stole second to put herself in scoring position for an Ambrosino single up the middle to earn the first run of the night. Ambrosino then stole second and got herself in position to score on a Lum ground out as she came home on a single to left from Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) to make it a 2-0 game early.  

La Verne got one run back in the bottom of the second, and then took the lead in the third inning utilizing a sacrifice fly, a double down the right field line and a single to center to have three runners cross the plate and take a 4-2 lead.  

Lum cut right into that lead with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth, her first of the season, but the Leopards responded in the bottom half of the frame to regain a two-run lead, 5-3. 

It was Lum again in the top of the fifth, with a single to right field to bring home Ambrosino to get within one, 5-4, but La Verne solidified the win on a Ashley Rodriguez (West Covina, CA) single in the team's last at bat of the sixth inning to come away with the win.  

GAME TWO 

WPI struck first, but La Verne was able to erase a four-run lead to come away with the game-two victory and sweep.  Lum continued her hot streak in the first inning with a single up the middle to bring home Russell from second base to make it a 1-0 game early on.  

La Verne eventually evened the score in the bottom of the second on a Rodriguez homer, but in the top of the third WPI put together a four-run inning highlighted by a three-run home run from Ambrosino, her first roundtripper of the year. Meg Sherwood (Norfolk, MA) walked to start off the inning, moved to second on a single to the pitcher by Russell and both runners stole a base to advance to second and third, setting up Ambrosino for the shot.  

With two outs on the board later in the inning, Alicia Salvalzo (Hudson, NH) beat out an infield single which brought home Lum, who reached initially on a double to left center, to take a 5-1 lead.  

La Verne answered in the bottom half of the frame with a double to left center, a single up the middle and a sac fly to bring themselves within one, 5-4.  

The Leopards took a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning, their first of the game, scoring all three runs with two outs on the board. Rodriguez walked and stole second to set up the game-tying run after a single to left from Erika Garcia (West Covina, CA). Garcia and Mia Pintado (Whittier, CA), who moved Garcia over to third on a single to right, were both brought home by another single to right, this time from Julie Contreras (Rancho Cucamonga, CA) to gain the 7-5 advantage.  

The Leopard sealed the win with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth while WPI left 12 runners on base in the loss. 

The Engineers wrap up the road trip with a doubleheader at Whittier on Saturday afternoon when they kick off the duo of games at 2 pm. La Verne heads to Pomona-Pitzer for the first of a three-game series with the Sagehens starting on Friday night at 3pm followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at Noon.
