WORCESTER -- WPI women's rowing competed for the Donahue Cup as part of racing on Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday morning. The varsity eight finished second in both its heat and the grand final as top-ranked Williams was victorious in both races.
Holders of the Barbara Grant Donahue as champions in 2022 and 2019, the fourth-ranked Engineers rowed well in each of their pieces, finishing 4.63 seconds behind (6:26.37 to 6:31.00) the No. 1 Ephs in the morning heats and 4.09 seconds behind (7:04.9 to 7:08.99) in the early afternoon grand final. WPI bested Rochester, Conn College and Simmons in its heat and No. 11 Clark, Washington College (MD) and Rochester in the grand final.
The second varsity eight also logged matching second place finishes Saturday morning, finishing 3.03 seconds behind (6:59.39 to 7:02.42) Williams in their heat and 5.54 seconds behind (7:24.3 to 7:29.84) in the grand final. In the grand final, the Crimson and Gray edged third place Clark by less than a second (7:29.84 to 7:30.82 ), considerably ahead of Washington and Rochester.
The third varsity eight gave WPI a hat trick of silvers, clocking a time of 7:46.35 as Williams (7:34.95) won the race while Rochester (7:57.75) was third and Conn College (8:18.57) fourth.
The Engineers are back at it on Sunday, hosting RIT, PLU, Wellesley on Lake Quinsigamond beginning at 9am in an another connected regatta with a heats/finals progression that also features Bates, Hamilton, Trinity.
