WORCESTER -- WPI women's rowing competed on back-to-back days for the first time this spring with the varsity eight finishing fourth in racing on Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond that included seven teams ranked in the Top 13 nationally.
The varsity eight began the day with in a heat that featured the two teams to win the last four NCAA V8 national championships in Bates (2018, 2019, 2021) and the Engineers (2022) and it was the Bobcats that reached Regatta Point first by three seconds (6:48.2 to 6:51.2) over WPI with Hamilton third (7:00.0) and Washington (MD) fourth (7:25.6).
The grand final saw No. 4 Wellesley seize control early and hit the finish line with a winning time of 6:48.1. 2-3-4 was separated by less than a second with second-ranked Bates claiming silver (6:52.1) to edge No. 12 Trinity (6:52.4) and fifth-ranked WPI (6:53.2). No. 11 Clark (6:58.5) was fifth in the grand final while No 10 Hamilton (6:58.1) captured the petite final followed by No. 13 RIT (6:59.7), Washington College (MD) (7:16.7) and Pacific Lutheran (WA) (7:40.7).
WPI's second varsity eight placed third in its heat behind Bates (7:03.0) and Hamilton (7:04.7) and ahead of Washington (MD) (7:54.5). The hosts advanced to the grand final as its time of 7:12.9 was faster than the third-place finisher from the other heat (Clark - 7:17.6). In the aforementioned grand final, the Engineers clocked a fifth-place time of 7:12.1. Wellesley took first with a time of 6:56.7 followed by Hamilton (6:59.4), Bates (7:05.8) and Trinity (7:09.3).
The third varsity was the largest collegiate race so far this spring on Lake Quinsigamond with Bates taking home the top prize with a time of 7:02.2. Wellesley earned silver (7:07.9), Hamilton (7:27.5) nipped the Engineers (7:28.8) for third while Trinity was fifth (7:30.8) and Clark sixth (7:55.9).
WPI returns to the water of Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday, competing against Connecticut College, UNH and William Smith beginning around 10am. The regatta again is connected with Clark's race, which features Ithaca, Colby, Trinity and will be contested with a heats/finals progression.
