WORCESTER -- The WPI softball team improved its win streak to five games with a pair of run-rule victories over Bridgewater State on Tuesday afternoon at Rooftop Field.  

With the pair of victories today and a five-game win streak, the Engineers are now 14-14 on the season, while Bridgewater State falls to 7-24-1 in 2023.  

Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) finished the day 4-for-6 with a pair of walks, four RBIs and three runs scored while Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA), who earned a victory from the circle in game one, finished with a 4-for-5 outing on the day also with four RBIs and three runs scored and a pair of homeruns.  

GAME ONE 

The Engineers routed Bridgewater State in game one, finishing things early with a 15-2, five-inning romp. WPI put four runs on the board in both the first and third innings and stacked up seven runs in the fourth inning en route to the victory.  

Four different players had multi-hit outings, led by Ambrosino and Destiny Lum (Kahaluʻu, HI) who both had a pair of hits on the day. Ambrosino finished with a 2-for-2 game one, knocking in two runs while also scoring a pair, and walking twice while Lum was also 2-for-2 on the day with three RBIs and two runs scored, while also walking twice.  

Bridgewater State actually got on the board first in the top of the first inning, gaining a quick 1-0 lead, but it was short lived as the Engineers responded with a four-spot, highlighted by a sacrifice fly from Nagy to start things, followed by a double down the rightfield line from Kallie Case (Phoenix, AZ) and a double to right field from Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) to earn the 4-1 lead.  

BSU added another run in the second inning, but again WPI responded with another four runs in the third inning. This time it was Liz Jordan (Yardley, PA) who got the scoring going with an RBI single to right, coupled with a bases loaded ground out from Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) that scored one and finished with an Ambrosino double to left that brought home two for the 8-2 advantage.  

In the fourth, WPI just needed a pair to put the run rule in action, and instead added seven to the scoreboard. Nagy started things off with a bang sending out her sixth round tripper of the year. Once WPI loaded the bases, Russell earned the RBI after drawing a walk, followed by an Ambrosino free pass to bring another run home. Lum cleaned up the basepaths with a double to left field that brought home three and Mia Francisco (Hudson, NH) sent a double down the leftfield line that brought home Lum for the 15-2 advantage and victory.  

Nagy pitched the entirety of the game, allowing just two hits to the Bears and just one earned run while striking out five of the 20 batters she faced.  

GAME TWO 

Game two was all Engineer. WPI put up a pair of runs in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings to walk away with the walk-off victory. It was a triple to left field from Ambrosino who drove home the final two runs of the outing to give WPI the walkoff victory.  

Pritchard picked up the win on the day, throwing all six innings of action, allowing three hits and no runs while striking out two in her longest outing of the season, and first solo shutout of 2023.  

Nagy started the scoring in the second with a solo shot and a Sophia Gannoe (East Lyme, CT) groundout to first base, bringing home Ava Laughlin (Chester Springs, PA) to make it 2-0 after two.  

In the third inning, back-to-back doubles from Lum and Nagy built that lead to 4-0 and a Russell single to right field drove home a pair in Amelia Montgomery (Acushnet, MA) and Francisco to bolster the lead to six.  

It took until the sixth inning for the Engineers to earn their run-rule advantage but with one out on the board and a pair of runners on for Ambrosino, the grad student cleared the bases and drove home Jordan and Russell to earn the walk-off victory.  

UP NEXT

The Engineers are back looking to keep the win-streak going with their weekend of NEWMAC doubleheaders starting on Friday afternoon, April 21, with a twinbill against Smith beginning at 3:30pm followed by a Saturday slate against Clark, beginning at Noon. Both sets of games will take place at Rooftop Field. Bridgewater State is back in action on Saturday, April 22 with a doubleheader against Fitchburg State at home beginning at 12:30pm.
