Another Friday, More Cerbo Magic as Softball Sweeps Smith with Dueling One-Run Triumphs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WORCESTER -- The WPI softball team extended its win-streak to seven games with a sweep of Smith on Friday night at Rooftop Field.

The Engineers (16-14, 8-4 NEWMAC) held of Smith (11-17, 2-8) in game one to come away with a 4-3 victory, before ending things with their second walk-off victory in the last three games to earn an extra innings, 5-4 win over the Pioneers.  Pinch-hitter extraordinaire Gabi Cerbo (Middletown, NJ) came through twice on the day, starting with a two-run single in the opener and concluding with the game-winning sac fly in the night cap.  The graduate student's only action this season has been in 13 pinch hitting opportunities where has delivered five hits in 10 official at-bats with a pair of sacrifice flies, a walk and an impressive 11 runs batted in.

GAME ONE

A 2-for-2 effort from Destiny Lum (Kahaluʻu, HI) brought home half of the team's runs in the game en route to a 4-3 victory over Smith College to start the afternoon. Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) picked up the game one victory, pitching all seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits two walks and striking out seven.

Smith was the first to get on the board in the top of the second inning, but WPI evened the score in the third thanks to a Lum sacrifice fly to center that drove home Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA), who had reached base via her 100th career hit, a single to right center.

In the fourth inning, the Engineers added another pair of runs to the board as a single to center from Cerbo brought home both Kallie Case (Phoenix, AZ) and Jocelyn Diaz (Reedley, CA) to give WPI its first lead of the day.

The fifth inning brought in another run for the Engineers, what would be the ultimate game winner, as Lum's single to right center drove in Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA) to make it a 4-1 game.

Smith made things interesting in the sixth inning as back-to-back hits, with a pair of outs on the board, cut the Engineer lead to just one run, but WPI was able to hang on for the win.

GAME TWO

A Cerbo sac fly, in the bottom of the eighth inning, drove in the game winner as the Engineers came away with the sweep of Smith on Friday evening.

In extra innings, the international run rule was in place as both teams started with runners on second base. Smith was able to get two runners in scoring position at the top of the inning, but WPI stymied them and headed to the bottom half of the inning still tied.

Togneri was the last out of the seventh so she was placed on second, and was replaced by Meghan Urakawa (Chandler, AZ) as a pinch runner. Diaz started things off by grounding out to second base, which advanced Urakawa to third base. Cerbo stepped in as a pinch hitter for Liz Jordan (Yardley, PA) and stepped up, sending a shot to centerfield and driving in the game winner.

WPI put a three-spot on the board in the first inning, but Smith was able to get a pair back in the fourth and fifth innings. The Engineers matched the Pioneers' output in the fifth to regain a 4-2 lead. But Smith added one in each of the sixth and seventh innings to even the score and send things to extra innings.

Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) and Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) pitched well for the hosts in the nightcap before Togneri worked the final two innings and picked up the win for the Engineers, her second victory of the day and eighth of the year.

NEXT UP

WPI is back in action on Saturday for a doubleheader against Clark again at Rooftop Field beginning at Noon. Smith returns to the diamond also on Saturday at Noon when they head to Cambridge to take on another set of Engineers.
