Women's Rowing

Late Rally by Sixth-Ranked Women's Rowing Falls a Second Short of Gold in Saturday Racing

WORCESTER -- WPI women's rowing raced in three highly competitive 2,000-meter events Lake Quinsigamond on Saturday morning.  Both the varsity and second varsity eights were particularly tight, seeing races decided by a second or less.

Ithaca got off to a quick start and led WPI by about a boat length midway through the race but the hard-charging Engineers made up significant ground during the third 500 meters but the seventh-ranked Bombers fended off the sixth-ranked Crimson and Gray by a second (7:00.18 to 7:01.18).  WPI did extract some revenge on third-place Trinity.  Six days after the Bantams edges the hosts by less than a second, the Boynton Hillers reached the finish line more than five seconds ahead of No. 5 Trinity (7:06.38).  No. 11 Clark was fourth (7:09.28) followed by No. 15 Colby (7:16.38).

The Crimson and Gray was also forced to rally in the second varsity eight, as they found themselves behind both Ithaca and Trinity early on and rallied to produce a finish that featured all three boats within a second.  Ithaca reached the final buoys in a time of 7:12.1, just ahead of the Bantams (7:12.5) and the Engineers (7:13.0).  Clark was next in a time of 7:26.5 while Colby was fifth (7:44.7) and Conn College sixth (7:56.3).

WPI logged a third place showing in the third varsity eight, clocking a time of 7:44.0.  The Bombers completed a Saturday sweep, posting a time of 7:33.9, followed by Trinity 5.6 second behind (7:39.5).  Clark (8:08.8) placed fourth with Colby fifth (8:33.7).

The Engineers host Tufts on Sunday in the Bernie Brown Cup.  Action begins with the Varsity Eight at 9:30am.
