WORCESTER -- Tufts regained the Bernie Brown Cup as it knocked off WPI's varsity eight in racing on a rainy and raw Sunday on Lake Quinsigamond. The Jumbos were victorious in all three races on the day.
Tufts, ranked third in the most recent Pocock CRCA Top 15, was able to reach the finish line 2.65 seconds ahead of the Engineers, who are ranked sixth nationwide. The Jumbos reached the final buoys in a time of 6:47.5 while WPI followed quickly behind in 6:50.15.
The guests captured the second varsity eight race by just under 10 seconds with the Jumbos clocking a time of 7:01.2 while the Crimson and Gray finished in 7:11.11. Tufts went 1-2 in the third varsity eight race with its A entry reaching the final buoys 7:11.5 and its B boat posting a time of 7:25.7 compared to WPI's time of 7:47.09.
The No. 5 Crimson and Gray begin the championship season next Saturday, co-hosting the NEWMAC Championships on Lake Quinsigamond with No. 11 Clark. Others competing include No. 2 Wellesley, No. 8 Smith, No. 9 Coast Guard, Mount Holyoke and Simmons. Racing begins at 8:30am.
