Softball and Regionally-Ranked Brandeis Split a Wednesday Non-Conference Double Dip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Waltham, MA --- The WPI softball team's nine-game win-streak was snapped Wednesday afternoon during a mid-week doubleheader at non-conference foe Brandeis. The Judges eked out a 2-1 game one victory before falling 7-1 in game two to the Engineers.

WPI improves to 19-15 on the year with the split while Brandeis updates its record to 22-11.

Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) scored four of the Engineers' eight runs on the day while Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) picked up the game two win.

GAME ONE

Mirroring the WPI of late, Brandeis earned a walk-off victory over the Engineers in game one as a Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, VA) single to centerfield in the bottom of the seventh inning brought home Haley Nash (Delmar, NY) for the game-winning run.

Destiny Lum (Kahaluʻu, HI) got the ball rolling in the fourth inning, ripping an RBI single to left field that drove in Russell for the first run of the day. But Brandeis answered in the bottom half of the inning, evening the score on a sac fly foul out to right field before coming away with the walkoff, game one win.

GAME TWO

In game two it was all Engineer as WPI got a run on the board in the first inning, and kept the runs coming all game en route to the victory. In addition to her three runs scored, Russell was 2-for-4 on the day. Coupled with Lindsay Ambrosino's (Chelmsford, MA) two-hit effort and Lum's three RBI game, the Engineers easily earned the bounce back win.

The first run of the day came via Lum's bat as she sent a sacrifice fly to rightfield to bring home Ambrosino for the opening score. Lum added to her RBI total in the fourth inning when she reached base on an error by the Judge shortstop, that brought home Russell for the 2-0 lead.

Another Brandeis miscue resulted in WPI's third and fourth runs of the game. Russell reached on a fielder's choice and after an errant throw moved up to second. The Brandeis pitcher tried to pickoff Alex Sheehan (Marion, MA) at third, but instead she came around to score and brought home Ava Laughlin (Chester Springs, PA) with her. In the next at bat Ambrosino singled to left which scored Russell, making it a 5-0 advantage.

A Lum single to center in the sixth drove in both Russell and Meg Sherwood (Norfolk, MA) to build WPI's lead to seven and despite Brandeis getting a run back in the bottom half of the inning, WPI went on to earn the win.

Pritchard pitched six innings, allowing just three hits and the one run while walking two and striking out three in the win. Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) finished out the game allowing just one hit in the final inning of action as she closed out the game.

UP NEXT

WPI is back in NEWMAC action this weekend with a Friday doubleheader at Springfield beginning at 3pm followed by a Saturday twinbill at home against Wellesley starting at Noon. Brandeis looks to bounce back tomorrow at home against Lesley college with a doubleheader beginning at 3pm.
