Springfield, MA --- Springfield got the best of the WPI softball team on Friday afternoon as the Pride rallying to upend the Engineers 4-2 in game one and 12-4 in six innings in game two.  

With the losses, WPI drops to 19-17 overall but is still in the top-4 in the NEWMAC with a 10-6 conference record. With the sweep, Springfield remains in a tie for second place with a 12-4 conference effort and are 31-7 overall on the season.  

Destiny Lum (Kahalu?u, HI) was responsible for both of the Engineer runs in game one while Sydney Russell (Arlington, VA) put together a three hit effort in game two.  

GAME ONE 

WPI got out to a fast lead putting two runs on the board in the top of the first thanks to a Lum homerun that drove in Lindsay Ambrosino (Chelmsford, MA), who got on base one batter earlier by drawing a walk.  

But the Springfield defense would lock down over the next six innings, holding the Engineers to just three more hits as they finally got on the board in the fourth inning with a solo shot by Callie Gendron (Berlin, CT) before putting together a three-run bottom of the sixth inning that saw a couple of singles bring home three as Springfield was able to overcome down the stretch for the win, snapping WPI's seven game conference win-streak.  

Sophia Togneri (Hudson, MA) allowed just four hits and a run through the first five innings of action, but a four hit, three run sixth was the deciding factor in the loss. Gillian Kane (New Caanan, CT) picked up the win for Springfield as Emily Gell (Trumbull, CT) stepped in for the save.  

GAME TWO 

Springfield kept the momentum of game one going into game two as they put up a seven spot in the first inning of action, building up, what would be, an insurmountable lead. The Pride put up all seven runs against starting pitcher Kelly Pritchard (Orange, CT) who lasted the first inning of action, allowing six hits and the seven runs.  

Lum actually got the Engineers on the board first in the top of the first with an RBI double to left field scoring Ambrosino before the Springfield bats got going.  

Springfield added another trio of runs in the second to improve their lead to 10-1 before Emma Nagy (Monroe, WA) got a couple of runs back, helping her own cause, with a two-run shot to left field. In the sixth, Lum scored another with a solo shot to center to make it a 10-4 game, before Springfield earned the walkoff, run rule victory with a two run single to left centerfield that ended the game.

The Engineers will play host to Wellesley on Saturday morning in their final doubleheader of the regular season when they take on The Blue beginning at 10 am, please note the time change. Springfield also closes out the regular season at home against Wheaton beginning at 11 am Saturday.
